Mardi Gras Galveston 2011: The Largest Mardi Gras Celebration in Texas

The biggest Mardi Gras celebration in Texas takes place in Galveston Island Friday, Feb. 25 through Tuesday, March 8. This is the 100th year for the Mardi Gras Galveston celebration. More than 200,000 people attend the event each year.

The City of Galveston hosts the two-week event showing off its downtown and beachfront. Mardi Gras! Galveston this year will feature seven parades, lots of music on two stages, festivals and children's activities in the Uptown Entertainment District on the island. There will also be pageants and elegant balls during the celebration.

The first weekend of Mardi Gras Galveston will feature Neon Trees, an alternative rock band. The Neon Trees band performance is at 10 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 26. A variety of bands will pay throughout the Mardi Gras celebration weekend to provide the musical entertainment.

The Mardi Gras Galveston parades this year include the Seawall parades and carnival. This year's other parades on Friday, Feb. 25 are: Salute to George Mitchell Parade, Uptown Funky Umbrella Brigade, Krewe da' Yaga's Cafe Parade. The Mardi Gras parades on Feb. 26 are the Houston Chronicle Neauxs Krewe Parade, iheartradio krewe Parade and Art Cars of Houston Parade. On Feb. 27, Family Day, the Sunshine Kids Parade takes place.

It costs $15 to for admission to the Uptown Entertainment District. If you purchase a ticket in ahead of time online it's $10 for an advance ticket to Mardi Gras Galveston. You'll need the ticket to enter the entertainment district on Friday, Feb. 25 and Saturday, Feb. 26. Family Day is on Sunday, Feb. 27. Tickets are $5 on Family Day for teens and adults. Children 12 years and under are free admission. Purchase tickets for entrance to the Uptown Entertainment District at www.mardigrasgalveston.com.

The Mardi Gras Galveston events are sure to excite locals and visitors for two weeks with the lively day and night parades. Feel free to scream for beads during the parades as you watch the floats, performers and the lively march bands make their way down the street.

If you're planning to travel to Galveston for Mardi Gras, make your hotel arrangements soon if you plan on staying on the island. Hotel rooms are limited on the island.
