The term Mardi Gras is really a French word that means Fat Tuesday, and it's the day before fasting begins for Lent in the Catholic religion. However many people celebrate this day with costumes with wild masks, sporting events, dances and of course the huge parades.
In 2010, Mardi Gras will be held on March 8, and will be a huge celebration. With the recession easing many folks do not have money for travel, and others do not wish to take the travel so hosting a party at your own location is a great idea.
Even though this holiday marks the start of a catholic holy time, anyone can and often participates. It can be a multiple ethic celebration and it's a lot of fun. All one needs for a party id food, people and a reason to celebrate and Mardi Gras fits that bill.
Head to your favorite party supply store and pick up simple bead necklaces for your guests. Purchase a wide variety of colors, as people typically wear several of these together. Also, pick up some bright colored paper plates, cups, and napkins. A paper tablecloth will round out the paper goods. Grab some nice pillar candles while you are there and paper decorations if possible.
It's most likely much easier to create your own Mardi Gras invitations as 0they can be very hard to locate. Search for clipart that would work online or simply write you are invited to my Mardi Gras party and glue some confetti inside!
Typical snack foods are great but search the internet for foods that are served during this carnival. It's called Fat Tuesday for a reason so you need to serve rich foods such as filled donuts. A Crockpot of gumbo is a great idea. Fried foods such as finnel cakes with different tops would be great, but above else please remember the special dietary needs of the guests. Its always good to have some health snacks available.
It's the music that makes a party and the wrong music could break the Mardi Gras party. Search the internet for some Cajun music.
