Mardi Gras, or Shrove Tuesday, is probably the wackiest occasion on the annual calendar. On this day, celebrants are free to indulge in the playful practice of excessive eating and partying. This is (loosely) meant to compensate for Ash Wednesday, which comes the following day, requiring Christians to fast and perform penance. It should be noted that Mardi Gras is a secular event that is not endorsed by the Church. In recent years, this occasion has become a big social gathering allowing for some wacky fun. Below are a few interesting Mardi Gras quotes and sayings from folk traditions.
"Free to eat; freer to drink."
"A non-French speaking person may mistake Mardi Gras for 'mowing grass during March'."
"Mardi Gras is New Orleans' lively soul. Don't let anyone say otherwise."
"Is it Mardi Gras yet?"
"Throw me something, mister!"
"The first and last fun day of the year."
"Carnivals are the best things about Mardi Gras."
"Count some beads."
"And thus carnival season ends."
"How much food can one eat on Mardi Gras?"
"Mardi Gras was started by the French, but popularized by Americans."
"The longest Tuesday."
