Margaret Cho Returns to ABC on Dancing with the Stars

I remember watching Margaret Cho, that spunky Korean-American comedienne, on her first television show back in 1994 called "All-American Girl." Margaret portrayed Margaret Kim, a woman who had friends across the cultural lines. The series was based on her stand-up routines which are quite funny, with the most noticeable thing about the cast being that it included both Japanese (Clyde Kusatsu) and Chinese (B. D. Wong, J. B. Quon) actors. The series was going well and even earned Margaret an American Comedy Award that year for being the funniest female stand up comic. Due to growing health problems due to the stresses of the series, Margaret eventually had to drop out, and the series was canceled. Not too many Asian television series have existed since hers, and the even briefer "Pink Lady" with Sid Caesar back in 1980 remains all but forgettable. Starring Keiko Masuda and Mitsuyo Nemoto, "Pink Lady" was more of a variety show that had musical guests each week. But Maragaret Cho is someone who has staying power in the realm of television. So even though her old series has been canceled, she is returning to ABC, the network that once hosted "All-American Girl", and the one she dissed for causing her so many health problems. During "All-American Girl" Margaret was pressured to lose weight for the series and did - a total of 30 pounds in a short amount of time which caused damage to her kidneys. She even overcame substance abuse problems and got back on the straight and narrow with her comic career. Despite her show being canceled, Margaret still remained in the entertainment field, appearing on television shows like "Sex and the City", "'Til Death", and "Drop Dead Diva." Margaret Cho has seen changes made in television programming since her last show, and indeed they have changed; you would be hard pressed to not find a reality show on a major network during prime-time. While she may have felt that taking a break from having her own series was best for her, her talent is something that definitely belongs in front of a television camera. Margaret Cho is in fact funny, not the kind of of funny frequently found in reality shows - Margaret's style is more comparable to that of Carol Burnett - but people of older generations

are just as likely to appreciate her comic style as those of the younger generation. After documenting her troubles with ABC in "I'm the One That I Want" in 2000, Margaret Cho is sure to be a favorite on "Dancing With the Stars" with her fans.
