Marge Simpson Playboy Pics Arouses Amusement

Start of a Trend for 'Toon Playmates?

Mark Whittington
So far as anyone knows, Marge Simpson's Playboy pics constitutes the first time that a cartoon character has ever appeared on the cover of that venerable magazine. It is also one of the rare occasions that a playmate has been a wife and mother.

Usually Playboy prefers to display a young (between the ages of 18 and 22), unmarried woman to grace its cover. Unfortunately since Playboy seems to have run out of actual live girls to expose their attributes and that there are few unmarried young girls who are suitable who are available, then Marge Simpson will have to do.

The problem is that most episodic cartoon shows are family based (albeit sometimes not family oriented) sitcoms. That means that the universe of female 'toons are either angst ridden teenage girls (unsuitable because of their age) or their moms (ditto.) Marge Simpson is likely in her thirties (and has been for almost twenty years), which is rather old for the cover of Playboy.

Marge Simpson, who has a voluptuous figure and weird hair, is probably one of the best choices for her demographic. Peggy Hill and Lois Griffin are no doubt nice people (though Lois must be a little bent to stay married to Peter), but a bit dowdy for the role of Playboy cover girl. On the other hand, Wilma Flintstone probably looks pretty fetching underneath that animal skin tunica.

On the other end of the spectrum, add a couple of years to Judy Jetson or Violet Incredible (and a few bounds for Violet) and we might be able to talk. On the other hand Meg Griffin is right out. She will never be attractive with or without her clothes on and the experience, considering her issues, would probably kill her.

There are a couple of female cartoon characters who are neither angst ridden teenagers nor their put upon moms who might look good au natural on the cover of Playboy. One of them is the Esurance gal, the pink haired, cat suited wonder who seems to be as much super spy as she is insurance sales person. She even occasionally spouts a politically correct, ecological cause that would provide a veneer of respectability to the t and a.

The other 'toon who would look good with her own Playboy cover is Jade from Jonny Quest. Jade, as everyone remembers, was the pith helmet wearing, gun totting babe who was also the on again off again girl friend of Race Bannon. Jade certainly has the body for Playboy, albeit not the "girl next door" persona that Hugh Hefner claims to favor.
