Mariamuna, the Traveling Gin (Genie)

Harold Dean Sink
As I laid down for the umpteenth time

I wished that my sleep would be sublime.

As usual thoughts danced in a race within my head.

"Will I ever fall asleep?" was my only dread.

Then alas, slumber came gradually overcoming my busy brain.

While I dreamt of weird and fantastical dreams,

I found I was able to control them again, or so it would seem.

Typically my concious took over and woke me

In rememberance of what really is reality.

Yet, something was different and startelling all at once.

The realization that someone else was in bed with me gave me a fright.

How did this person get in my home, and slip under the covers with me this night?

"Don't be alarmed," said a soft voice. I could not move.

My body is frozen still, and my voice is silent through and through.

What has happened, and what will happen to me?

"I have come to help you in your quest for good.

It took some time to find you in this neighborhood.

I hear you wishing every night for something more.

So I decided to visit you next walking through your door."

My voice was let loose and kept silently at bay.

"Who are you? How did you get in my home?" I asked trying not to appear scared.

"You know who I am. You even thought you dreamt ME up silly, boy," she replied, sending chills through my hair.

My mind searched for an answer to such a reply.

Thoughts rambled here and there and up on high.

"Who could this person be? And is this a man or woman in bed with me?"

Trying to free myself, I feel the grip lose its hold.

The encompassing forcefield is gone. Will I be so bold?

"You can run and scream, even shout for help.

You can make all sorts of noise, but nobody will hear your yelp."

"How are you able to do this, and what do you want with me?"

A long pause in silence seems to pierce through my chilling skin.

The thought of this stranger in my home..."How did they get in?"

"Young man, I can read your thoughts, too.

Just ask of me what you want in a wish, and it will be given unto you."

Then suddenly it hit me, "Is this person really a gin?"

"My name is Mariamuna, young man, and yes I am a Gin.

You see my last wisher was done so I let myself on in.

It is now your turn to bring your wishes to life.

I know how long you have been single, and can bring you a wife."

She then begun to glow similar to a star.

"Is this really happening to me, or am I in a deep sleep?

Surely this person cannot be a gin and in my keep."

The room began to illuminate with shadows on the walls.

Then all of a sudden all was gone, and we were in a great hall.

"This is where I was raised, before I was taken from home."

Mariamuna began to tell me her story and where she was from.

"Never mind how old I am, it is irrelevant now. It is here where my life as a Gin begun.

I was enslaved by an evil warrior to overthrow all who opposed him then.

What he did not know is that my heart belong to Allah. God is how you know Him.

I prayed in secrecy to never worship Shaitan, and vowed to do God's will.

"It was God's plan to use me against this evil man and his men.

My life was offered as a sacrifice to Shaitan to become a Gin.

Since they were not allowed to kill me as I was pure,

They hoped to bring great power to them by using me to lure

Shaitan, and ask for what they wanted.

"The thought of having a Gin on their side seemed their only hope.

Shaitan turned me into what they wanted to be their proverbial coat.

So it was done. I had become a Gin,

But the only thing I could do was to protect them.

Eventually I was banned for my supposed limitless power.

"I know you have seen and read much about my kind.

I am not here to hurt you or cause harm because God has kept me kind.

My only redemtion is to help those who cry out for wishes so much.

Being a travelling Gin in a way has become a crutch.

I have no idea what will break the hold of Shaitan.

"All I do know is to grant your wishes so I can move on when you are done.

Therefore, young man, you should not worry. Nobody else knows I am in your home.

Ask what you will, but be careful in what you wish.

Others before you have wished and wished making quite a mess."

Where to start was the question, and the 'careful' part needed to be considered.

I slid back under the covers looking into her eyes,

Then placed my arm around her thanking the Lord on high.

My forehead met hers, and my eyes shut, while my thoughts raced again.

Which one of my hundreds or thousands of wishes should I begin?

"Thank you for coming to me. " I said.

"I did not realize my wishes have become so incessantly growing in number.

I also understand that not making a well thought out wish would be such a blunder.

Forgive me for being ignorant, but is it not impossible for you

To grant a wish against a person's will as you wish me to?

A wife would be nice, but that is something I must do on my own.

"Besides there are more important things to wish for now

Than to not spend my life alone. Can you be released, and how?

That is what I would like to know."

"What does that matter to you? Besides, I really do not know."

My astonishment to her reply shook me up.

Here with me is someone willing to do something for me,

And I want to return the favor to her by setting her free.

Surely those fantastical stories have some truth to them.

Does she not want to be free from being a gin?

If I were to wish it would it release her?

I knew then what I must do for this woman of surpassing age.

She may not understand, but I want to release her from her cage.

Me being a Christian may seem rather odd.

Why would I make wishes instead of asking for help from God?

I may be somewhat of a patient man, but even I am human just like everyone else.

"I do have several wishes, but there is only one I want granted.

It may seem odd to you. It is the only wish I have wanted.

I wish to have the powers of a gin without becoming one at all."

Without hesitation she granted this wish so tall.

A flash of light came before my eyes and she was gone.

Where could she have gone?

What have I done?

Is she dead now, and with God?

Why did I not think of that? "God?"

What could have gone wrong?

Powers of the gin in me took over and found her back in her time.

I sent her back to live out her life, but with that man of the evil kind.

Throwing away my fears, I know what I must do.

I shall go back and find her, no wait...that is not what I should do.

I will think her back to me.

Here she is, laying soundly asleep next to me in the dark of night.

Her long black hair and rough sand licked skin are covered in cloth so light.

Looking around the room it became cleaned as I thought it through.

Debts are paid, the car is fixed, and the house is weatherproofed, too.

Back to sleep I will go wondering how to explain...

How this woman came to be

In bed with me,

And Mariamuna is her name.
