Marietta is a town of about 14,000 residents just across the Ohio River from Parkersburg, West Virginia. The town is home to the 100-year-old Fenton Glass Company and is known for its 19th-century architecture and as the site of the annual summer Sternwheel Festival.
Golf enthusiasts will find several courses in the Marietta area, including the Marietta Country Club and Pioneer Golf Center. Hotels in the city, most of which are on or near the Ohio River, range from historic to modern.
Lafayette Hotel
Built in 1918, the Lafayette is a Marietta downtown landmark. The hotel, named for the Marquis de Lafayette, is one of Ohio's last riverboat-era hotels. Post a CommentThen again, Martins Ferry residents would lay claim to the oldest permanent settlement as well having been settled the final time in 1785 but not becoming incorporated for another 77yrs. Not really sure why people still insist on Marietta being the first perm settlement in the NW territory.
Marietta is the oldest permanent settlement. It is not the oldest settlement in Ohio, however. Gnadenhutten is the oldest existing settlement as it was rebuilt on the original site which predated Marietta's founding by roughly a decade.
