While the game gives you quite a bit of characters and courses to start with, there is much more that you can unlock. While it can take some time to unlock everything, it is possible to unlock many things quickly.
Unlock Courses
Unlocking the courses could take a bit of time depending on your skill level. To unlock the Leaf Cup, you must place at least 3rd in the Banana and Shell Cups. Unlocking the Lightning Cup requires you to finish at least 3rd in the Leaf Cup. For the Special Cup to become unlocked, you must finish 3rd or better in the Star Cup. Last of all, the Star Cup, becomes unlocked when you finish at least 3rd in the Flower and Mushroom Cup.
While no new courses will become unlocked beyond those above, it is possible to play all of the courses in the opposite direction. The mirror mode will unlock when you finish the task of placing 1st in all of the cups at the 150cc level.
Unlock Bikes
The Zip Zip will become unlocked once you have won the Lightning Cup at 100cc. The next bike to unlock is the Shooting Star. This bike will become available once you have beaten the 100cc Star Cup. The Sneakster is another bike you can unlock. You can unlock the bike by attaining at least one star in all 100cc cups. The Magikruser can become available once you have played the time trials of at least eight courses. The Large Phantom bike can become unlocked once you have beaten the Special Cup in the mirror version. The small Quaker will become accessible once after you have won the 150cc Star Cup. To open the Bubble Bike you won't have to do anything beyond finishing first in the Leaf Cup. Another bike called the Dolphin Dasher will become accessible once you have won the Star Cup in the mirror version.
Unlock Cars
The Blue Falcon becomes unlocked when you win the Lightning Cup backwards. Another kart called the Cheep Charger becomes drivable once you have earned at least a one star ranking in all 50cc Retro Cup races. The last small car known as the Rally Romper and is accessible after you have unlocked the expert ghost data record. Two more cars become free when you have beaten the Leaf Cup. The Turbo Blooper at the 50cc and the Royal Racer at 150cc will be free for you to access. The Large Bikes can be gained once you have won a coupe of the 50cc and 150cc cups. The Dragonetti becomes opened after you win the 150cc Lightning Cup. The Piranha Prowler can become obtained after finishing first in the 50cc Special Cup. The last large kart to unlock is the Aero Glider; this becomes free once you have received at least one star in the Retro Cup.
Unlock Characters
Baby Daisy becomes free after you get at least one star in all cups at the 50cc level, whereas Diddy Kong comes about after you win all of the 50cc level cups. Dry Bones becomes unlocked after beating the 100cc level Leaf Cup. King Boo is freed up after you win the 50cc Star Cup. Toadette can be driven after you run a time trial through all 32 courses.
Tips
For a boosted start, press the acceleration button right when the yellow light disappears at the countdown.
When a red shell is heading your way, drop a banana in the pathway of the red shell and the two will collide, causing no damage to your kart.
With the guidance of above you'll know how to unlock certain characters, tracks, bikes, and courses in Mario Kart. While there are no cheats in the game, the tips mentioned along with practice will allow you to become among the best against your friends.
