Mark McGwire Admits to Using Steroids While in MLB

Mark McGwire Finally Came Clean and Admitted to Taking Steroids While Playing Baseball

Mark McGwire admitted to using steroids on Monday. That Mark McGwire finally admitted to using steroids is a good first step for the former Major League Baseball player. Before he admitted to taking steroids, it had long been rumored (and assumed) that McGwire used something to help him achieve the single season home run record that he set back in 1998. Now that McGwire has admitted to using steroids, it is going to vindicate all of the sports writers that had looked down upon him for alleged use, and had subsequently refused to vote for him on the Baseball Hall of Fame ballots these past few years.

Mark McGwire took a cowardly approach in issuing his admission though, as he did it through a statement he sent to The Associated Press on Monday. It's a sign of the times where a former baseball player does something like this rather than actually face the questions at a press conference. It is very similar to the way that Tiger Woods has been handling things recently, but now that sports analysts know for a fact that Mark McGwire was using steroids to help him play the game of baseball, he should fully understand that he is about to be vilified. There is no turning back from this fact now, and a simple phone call to the AP isn't going to be good enough to put this story to bed for good.

Now Mark McGwire owes both his fans and the fans of Major League Baseball a press conference because he intentionally hid the fact that he was using these steroids. He probably hoped that he could dodge questions for a few years and get elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame before he would actually have to admit that he took steroids. Maybe he even thought that if he was placed in the Baseball Hall of Fame that he would never have to come clean in the end. Now that he will be a hitting coach for the St. Louis Cardinals and will be serving as a role model to younger players, it's time to really face the music and host a press conference where he answers all the specific questions that anyone wants to ask.
