Mark Souder Affair: Abstinence for Teens, Not Married Politicians

With Link to Video of Mark Souder Being Interviewed About Abstinence by Affair Partner Tracy Jackson

Political cliché Mark Souder has joined the ranks of married conservative politicians who staunchly promote abstinence for teenagers while secretly indulging in sex outside of marriage themselves. Although the Souder affair could be just another ho-hum dog-bites-man story, an ironic plot twist in the Souder affair is that a video of Souder has surfaced in which he discusses abstinence for teens in a 2006 interview conducted by the woman with whom Souder was revealed as having an extra-marital affair (see link to Mark Souder abstinence video here). Further compounding the irony, not only was Mark Souder married during the affair, his affair partner Tracy Jackson, a part-time staffer on Souder's payroll, was also married.

While some pundits wondered whether Souder at least used a condom during the affair, a reference to the bias of many abstinence-only promoters against teaching teenagers about the use of condoms, the hypocrisy of the affair was probably lost on Souder, who resigned from his Indiana Congressional seat after recently winning a hotly contested Republican primary to run for re-election. (On a positive note, Souder's wife took a page from Jenny Sanford's book and did not appear at her husband's side during his obligatory mea culpa speech to the press, during which Souder fortunately refrained from describing affair partner Jackson as his "soul mate.")

One person commenting on the Mark Souder video posted on the TPM website wrote: "Let's adopt this as a standing rule: From now on, whatever conservatives say, we must assume they are doing the exact opposite. It seems to be a pathology with these people."

It was also suggested that Souder join Bristol Palin in her abstinence-only speaking tour, a campaign that could more accurately be re-named as the "Do as I Say, Not as I Do" Tour.

In the past two years, Republican politicians who have been caught with their pants down (and feet in their mouth) include Roy Ashburn, Mike Duvall, Paul Stanley, Mark Sanford, and John Ensign. While Democrats have also had affairs during this time period, a key difference is that most Democratic lawmakers do not actively promote the concept of sexual relations only within the confines of marriage while surreptitiously engaging in sex outside of marriage themselves.

Souder reminds me of my old high school principal: the most dour, puritanical man, on the outside, you could ever meet. On the inside, though, beat that hear of a Lothario. He had an affair with a teacher and wound up facing an alienation of affection lawsuit as well as getting his rear end terminated. Souder his his soul mate. Hey, the gal he was having an affair with was, like Souder's squeeze, Jackson!

It's just like I've always said - abstinence videos don't work.

Unfortunately there is hypocrisy among conservatives, and in the church itself, but experience is the best teacher. My Mom was a sixteen year old mother; she was a very angry person and my father couldn't have cared less about me. My home life was so stressful that I "experinced" my first stint in a mental hospital when I was nineteen years of age, and my adulthood has been very painful, at best. We have to think of the wellfare and health of the children being concieved and/ or born out of wedlock, and brought into the world before the parents are mature enough to be ready. Personally, I think abstinence is a good idea. I've been divorced for thirty years and have been a celebate single Christian for thirty years and it hasn't killed me. My life is full of the joy of the Lord and I can sleep at night without guilt keeping me awake.

Well, technically I guess it WAS sex after marriage for both of them. :)

Give the teens condoms and give Mrs. Souder the divorce she now undoubtedly wants. Teach responsible behaviors in all. In the end, it's all about making responsible, adult-like decisions, not how old one might be or what position one might attain. Acting the fool knows no age boundaries...

Funny stuff...any advice from politicians about what one shouldn't do privately seems an automatic invitation to satire. Just wait a while.

  • Mary Oberg5/19/2010

Well reported! Politicians have such a responsibility to live a life beyond reproach and serve as good examples!

Do as I say, not as I do!!!!!!!!
