Marmaris, Turkey's Most Popular Resort

Marmaris, Turkey on the Mediterranean Coast is a brash harbor town whose numbers swell to over 200,000 in the summer months. It is up to the individual visitor to decide if Marmaris is heaven or hell.

This harbor town can boast possibly the swankiest marina in Turkey and also has a fantastic natural harbor. In fact it is in this harbor that Lord Nelson organized his fleet for the attack on the French at Abukir in 1798.

If you can stand all the summer visitors then you will find that Marmaris offers a beautiful coastline, wonderful food, scrumptious local wines and friendly people.

The summer in Marmaris is long with great weather practically guaranteed from May until the end of October.

The night- life here is lively and there are numerous bars and clubs stretching along the coast.

Sights

Marmaris Castle

It is believed that there has been a castle in Marmaris since 3000B.C. and restoration work at the castle has been going on since 1979.

The castle has been turned into a museum that is home to 7 galleries the largest of which is used as an exhibition hall.

Along with the all the permanent displays this museum also offers artistic and cultural activities.

From the castle walls you will get a breath taking view of the Marmaris bay.

The castle is open 8am-noon & 1-5pm Tue- Sat.

Tours

There are many boat tours along the coast visiting outlying beaches and islands that are well worth taking.

A day's outing usually costs around 25-40 Euro per person but check before ageing to anything as to exactly what you will get for your money.

The tours usually take in Paradise Island, Phosphoros Cave, Aquarium, Amos, Kumlubuku, Turunc Green Sea and Icemeler.

If you choose to take 2-3 day trip then you will probably get to take in Dalyan and Kaunos.

You can also charter longer boat trips that will take you to Datca and the ruins at Knidos or along the Hisaronti Peninsula.

Eating and Sleeping

It has to be said that there are many good- value sleeping options within Marmaris especially for those who go self-catering. If you stay in Marmaris off-season then you can expect to receive some serious discounts.

Interyouth Hostel - This hostel is a source for good information and is efficiently run. The hostel itself is located inside the covered bazaar.

Maltepe Pansiyon - This is a great choice for budget accommodation with a beautiful shady garden and free internet.

Whilst staying in Marmaris you will find the bazaar area, Bar street and the old town around the castle area are good places to look for cheap eating options.

Marmaris has two perennially popular nightspots, Back Street and Areena. Areena has a large dance floor over which the bar is elevated.
