After last year's meeting, anticipation was high for the rematch. However, although it went longer, it was even clearer that Marquez was the dominant fighter. Despite having a swollen right eye, he withstood all of Diaz's charges, and took a fairly decisive victory.
The Marquez vs Diaz 2 results had the champion win 118-110, 117-111, and 116-112 on the three scorecards. Marquez improved to 51-5-1 overall, and kept his WBA and WBO lightweight titles. Diaz dropped to 35-4, with half of his defeats to Marquez.
After prevailing in the Marquez vs Diaz 2 results, the winner immediately started calling for another rematch, in another fight series. Marquez has fought another fighter twice, and in that case, failed to win any of them. That fighter is Manny Pacquiao, whose fight schedule has been subject to controversy lately.
The Marquez vs Diaz series followed two close Marquez vs Pacquiao matches, in which Pacquiao had a draw and a split decision win. Now Marquez wants to make it a trilogy, claiming it's 'what everyone wants to see.'
Of course, as much as Marquez vs Diaz 2 was anticipated, it paled in comparison to the fight fans really want to see. But since they won't get a Pacquiao-Floyd Mayweather fight this year, Pacquiao has moved on to face Antonio Magarito on November 13. After that, fans will pray for Pacquiao-Mayweather to be next, rather than Pacquiao-Marquez.
Still, the Marquez vs Diaz 2 results made the case that Marquez is still a threat, although he will turn 37 this month. He won't be able to wait forever for Pacquiao, however, so he might need to make other plans before long.
At the least, he still has a clear future ahead. Following Marquez vs Diaz 2, Diaz now has to consider how much longer he can go on. He has plans to enter law school, but after this second defeat to his rival, he may be open to starting his second career early.
