Martha Coakley (D) Concedes the Massachusetts Election to Scott Brown (R)
Democratic Stronghold in Massachusetts Crumbles to the Ground!
Coakley said she will not forget the determination with which she and her supporters approached the campaign, and that thousands of people had been on the streets since September campaigning for her election. Stating that she still believed in what she stood for, she would continue to fight for those beliefs after tonight. Coakley also stated she would never forget the passion and energy brought to the campaign. Part way through her concession, Coakley expressed her disappointment and sadness at losing the election, but stated she would always respect the voters wishes. She also touched on what she perceived as the anger of the public in regards to health care and other issues.
At approximately 10:00p, EST, with 93% of the precincts having reported in, the voting was Scott Brown 52% to Martha Coakley 47%. AP predicted at that point that Scott Brown had won the senate seat in MA.
Many people felt a Republican win for the seat previously held by the late Senator Ted Kennedy (D) to be an impossibility, and Massachusetts to be a democratic stronghold, but the surprise GOP win caused elation in the Republican party. Sarah Palin (R) maintained the victory indicated that the status quo of the Democratic party was not accepted by the populous, and that it showed the public's opposition to health care, government interference, and was a step to "... take our country back."
Palin characterized the Tea Party movement as representing the message that political power lies with the people, Independents felt the same way, and that was a platform that Republicans should be representing.
Fox News suggested the election was a stunning defeat to the White House and the Obama administration. The suggestion was made that the Democratic party should learn from the election, rather than blaming the loss totally on Martha Coakley. According to Fox News, Massachusetts was a state that Barack Obama carried by 26% in the presidential election approximately one year ago.
Scott Brown was expected to give his acceptance speech shortly after Coakley conceded.
