Martha Stewart and the Worst Celebrity Mothers

COMMENTARY | Martha Stewart's quest for perfection apparently did not include motherhood. Her daughter, Alexis Stewart, has written a tell-all book about growing up with her famous mother, "Whateverland: Learning to Live Here."

Alexis says while perfection was expected from her at all times, her mother didn't even have anything in the house for her to eat.

Alexis writes that her mother made her wrap her own presents at Christmas. Trick-or-treating wasn't even allowed. Instead, her mother would turn off all the lights and pretend they weren't home. For years, I had imagined Martha stitching up beautiful and elaborate costumes, but apparently that was not the case. Poor Alexis had no costume at all.

I never thought it would be easy to grow up with a mother like her, but for some reason I assumed the woman who made her employees cry would be at least trying to accomplish being a good mother.

Martha almost makes Joan Crawford seem motherly the way Alexis tells the story about her childhood. Many might appreciate their own mothers just a little bit more after reading "Whateverland." Kate Moss

Moss spent more time snorting cocaine and indulging her sex addiction than with her young daughter, Lila Grace. According to Mail Online, she missed her daughter's third birthday celebration, spending it in rehab. Her daughter is said to spend most of her time with a nanny and grandparents, and Moss has even left her with her drug-addicted boyfriend while she engages in sexual affairs with both men and women.

Jaid Barrymore

Drew Barrymore's Playboy bunny mother Jaid took her out partying before she could walk. It's a wonder Drew ended up turning out as well as she did, but she went through her teenage angst as a mere child, drinking at the age of 9 and snorting cocaine by 13. Children learn by example; Jaid set one of the worst possible her her daughter.

Courtney Love

Love was said to have done heroin while she was pregnant with her daughter, Frances Bean, and two years ago, when Love lost custody of her, she attacked Frances publicly on Facebook, telling her daughter that she was "clearly deluded," reports MTV.

When Frances was just 11, Love was arrested for a break-in at her ex-boyfriend's home. She overdosed on painkillers as well. Bean was appointed a guardian for two years while Love went into rehab.

These moms are enough to make most of us realize maybe we didn't have it all that bad.
