I attended class 2 days a week. We learned the basic way to stand, punch. block and kick. It seemed to me that after a few months many of the students were excelling much faster than I was. I found out that these students were practicing everyday at home. So my first training tip I learned at a young age was to practice. Learn a few techniques that work for you and practice. Get good at them! Make sure you feel comfortable when you are executing your moves.
Become more aware of your surroundings. Sounds strange I know, but just working on that little issue can save you plenty of grief. For some reason this isn't taught in many schools. Seems to me if you become more aware you will be more likely to stay out of trouble in the long run. Having studied martial arts for over 35 years now, I have managed to avoid any direct physical conflicts for 25 years. I believe the main reason why is I know when to leave an area. Certainly some of us are forced to walk through places that we know are not safe. Maybe where you park your car or walking to school etc. I cannot stress enough become more aware of your surroundings. Becoming more aware of your surroundings is easy, I call it conscience meditation. While many of the ancients teach the traditional trance like meditation and certainly there is a purpose to it. I teach you to become more conscience by trying to become more aware of your surroundings. This is a simple method of heightening your conscience awareness.
The next simple tip I learned was to relax. Yes the more you can relax the more power and accuracy your strikes will have. Think of a whip and how much power is at the end of it. Also I feel that if you are able to relax that you may be more aware of your surroundings. Martial arts training can be as hard as you want to make it. I prefer to have fun with my fitness training and use martial arts to stay in shape mentally and physically.
