1. Martin High School offers a wide variety of AP (Advanced Placement) classes. These classes, when successfully completed, make the student eligible to take a standardized mastery test. If the student passes the test with a certain score, then it is likely that colleges and universities will accept this and will award the student with college credit. Each university has it's own score that it will accept, so one university may give credit with a score of 3 and another college require a score of 5. The fee for testing is $38 which is quite a bit less than the cost of a college course. Martin offers AP classes in Computer Science, English, Fine Arts, Social Studies, Geometry, Calculus, and Statistics, just to name a few! Your child could complete one semester or more of college before ever graduating from high school!
2. Martin High School offers a diverse curriculum. It offers 5 foreign languages with 4 of them being eligible for AP exams. Students can take 4 years of the same foreign language which improves mastery and encourages fluency. If the child wishes to take a foreign language that is offered off campus and the program meetsspecific requirements, then that course may be accepted toward foreign language credit. Of course, being bilingual in today's world automatically gives you a boost in the job market, but it also looks awesome on that college application.
3. Martin High School offers a variety of athletic courses, encouraging participation from students with all skill levels. The 14 athletic courses that Martin offers vary from the traditional football and baseball to cross country, wrestling, and ice hockey. Each sport usually has more than one team (the girls softball program has at least 3 teams) so students that are not necessarily as experienced as others still have the opportunity to participate. Students that have been playing their sports for years will find a competative atmosphere and will be able to develop their skills to a new level. Students that are hoping for an athletic scholarship are in the right place. Recruiters are very familiar with Martin's programs as the reputation for excellence extends into the sports program.
Students also have the opportunity to take classes off campus for credit. The surrounding Metroplex offers Karate, TaeKwonDo, Dance, Boxing and more. This opens the students schedule up a little so they can take more academic classes.
4. Not many high schools can brag on their choir program, but Martin High School has one of the finest choir programs around. This program is not for the faint of heart. The choir director expects perfection and the students try their best to deliver an outstanding performance. The choir program builds from the ground up. By the time students are juniors and seniors, they could easily compete with college level choirs. The choir takes trips that are well worth the expense. Last year, students were awarded the opportunity to sing at Carnegie Hall in New York City. This is a fine arts program that builds skills to last a lifetime.
5. The school offers students the opportunity to get involved. There are approximately fifty extra curricular clubs and organizations listed on the schools web site. The student can be involved in any number of activities, events or clubs. Many of the clubs perform civic duties and fundraisers. Mission Arlington is a frequent recipient of the schools generosity receiving clothing, food and hours of labor each year. Nothing teaches an individual to value what he or she has more than working with those that have nothing.
Yes, Martin is a large high school with a large student body. In fact, it is larger than the first college that I attended! Instead of this being a negative point, however, I see it as a positive. If your child can grow and thrive at Martin, then college is not that big of an adjustment. You might say that it prepares them mentally in more ways that one! Martin High School will more than adequately prepare your child for college. It will prepare them for life.
