Martin Lawrence Live

I caught Martin Lawrence live during his Doin' Time Comedy Tour at the FOX Theatre in Detroit. The phrase Doin' Time must have real meaning for Martin because he performed like it was a chore. Don't get me wrong, I laughed more than a few times, but I'm sure the buzz I had and the fact that I was with someone who makes me laugh, also had something to do with it.

During his performance, which could not have been more than an hour, Martin recycled old jokes from his You So Crazy special, which was absolutely hilarious, and married them with a few new ones and was off the stage by 9:45pm! Mediocre and lukewarm are words I use to describe his performance, and my cousin, who was also in attendance agrees --

"Lukewarm is the perfect description, funny as heck for the first 15-20 minutes, then he tailored off something horrible, like you said, with the recycled jokes, then it was over, I was "Damn, that's it?", but still cool, it was worth a night out."

I skipped out on seeing the latest Big Mommas movie and the movie he did with Raven Symone for Disney, so I haven't enjoyed Martin on the big screen in a long time. I was expecting to be blown away with all new stand up material, instead Martin performed like he was obligated rather than obliged to return to the stage.

However, as my cousin states, it was worth a night out, and I did have a good time. We Love You, Martin!
