Martin Luther King Jr. Day Events in Los Angeles and Long Beach

Stephanie Mojica
This year's Martin Luther King Jr. Day, officially observed across the United States on January 19, 2009, is particularly special. The next day, the first African American President of the United States, Barack Obama, will be inaugurated into office. In Los Angeles, a city of diversity and a rich African American culture, there are many special Martin Luther King Jr. Day events planned in and around the "City of Angels" for 2009. There are also special activities commemorating the late civil rights activist around his actual birthday, which is January 15.

Wednesday, January 14, 2009, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

More than 150 groups of participants, including floats and bands, are slated to march in the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Kingdom Day Parade in the heart of Los Angeles. More than one million people usually crowd the streets of Los Angeles to commemorate King's memory and do their part to keep his dream alive. Vendors, including food booths, will be available before, during, and after the parade in a carnival-like atmosphere. Parking is extremely difficult and many streets will be closed off for the parade and festivities, so arriving early is highly recommended.
