Martin Luther King Jr's Day

Words from a Civil Rights Leader

Sanity Rose
The 2009 celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day will hold special meaning, landing one day before the Presidential Inauguration of our nations first black President. Many will look to this January 19 (MLK day) with new meaning and understanding. Will the legacy of Barack Obama open new doors to people of all colors? Will Kings words finally ring true for a society of people who can no longer be called a minority?

The following are quotes from the great Martin Luther King Jr., during his life, dedicated to the civil rights of American people.

"I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character" - During march on Washington in 1963.

"An individual has not started living until he can rise above the narrow confines of his individualistic concerns to the broader concerns of all humanity."

"Change does not roll in on the wheels of inevitability, but comes through continuous struggle. And so we must straighten our backs and work for our freedom. A man can't ride you unless your back is bent."

"Nothing in this world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity."

"It may be true that the law cannot make a man love me, but it can keep him from lynching me, and I think that's pretty important."

"The curse of poverty has no justification in our age. It is socially as cruel and blind as the practice of cannibalism at the dawn of civilization, when men ate each other because they had not yet learned to take food from the soil or to consume the abundant animal life around them. The time has come for us to civilize ourselves by the total, direct and immediate abolition of poverty."

"Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that."

"I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted, every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made straight, and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed and all flesh shall see it together."

"I have decided to stick with love. Hate is too great a burden to bear."

"I submit to you that if a man hasn't discovered something that he will die for, he isn't fit to live."

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated on April 4, 1948, at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis Tennessee

I believe in life. Every ounce of simplicity and every mega-load of intensity enthralls me. I love the art of poetry and the art of truth.  View profile
