As for the Best Director win, Mr. Scorsese faced competition from Clint Eastwood for "Letters From Io Jim" as well as the directors of "Babel" 'United 93" and "The Queen." The Academy had some fine directors to choose from. That they chose to finally award Mr. Scorsese is a win that almost everyone will welcome.
As Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, and Francis Ford Coppola announced that Scorsese had indeed won the Oscar, the crowd rose in a rousing standing ovation that continued as he began to speak.
After thanking the crowd and once the din had died down, Scorsese joked "could you double check the envelope?" He then went on to thank the presenters, calling them his "old friends." After going on down his list, he went on to the cast, telling Leonardo DiCaprio "61/2 years of work we have done together, I hope another 12, 15." Later he commented on how people are always telling him he should win one "of these."
Martin Scorsese was nominated 5 times before for Best Director. His last time was two years ago for the Howard Hughes boo "The Aviator." He lost out to Clint Eastwood, who won for "Million Dollar Baby." This time, the statue went to Scorsese. His long list of credits include greats such as "Taxi Driver" "Good Fellas" and perhaps his most controversial, "The Last Temptation of Christ."
Martin Scorsese finally joined the ranks of Oscar winning directors. No one on this night deserved it more.

Post a CommentI think he deserved this one though for directing. But for "Best Picture" I don't think there was a single deserving candidate this year, because there wasn't an exceptional film. Other years there are several good candidates, but this year was weak.
I always wondered why he didn't get one earlier. Great article.
I absolutely love Scorsese's work. I think it was fitting that he won for a movie that encapsulated all of his talents into one. Woohoo! Finally, Scorsese can say he is an Oscar winner!
