Edward Norton, the actor who appeared in 2008 Marvel Studios release of The Hulk, is not in the running. He was until recently expected to reprise the role.
In an exclusive announcement to Hitflix.com, Marvel Studios president stated that money was not the overriding concern, but the studio needed to recruit an actor who would be as creatively and collaboratively supportive of the character and franchise as the rest of the cast of The Avengers cast: Robert Downey Junior (Iron Man), Chris Evans (Captain America), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Samuel L Jackson (Nick Fury) and Scarlett Johansen (Black Widow).
Edward Norton's agent confirmed that a studio representative had informed them earlier in the week that the studio had decided to go another way with the character after weeks of unremarkable negotiations.
Edward Norton has made no statement as yet. A comment is likely forthcoming though given the interest now generation in who will play Bruce Banner in the Joss Whedon directed movie. The Avengers is scheduled for release on May 4, 2012, with filming to commence in February of 2011.
That gives the studio, and Whedon a bit of time to generate buzz over casting the final Avengers character, though rumor has it the cast of Avengers, including, The Hulk, is to be announced at Comic-Con in San Diego between July 22 and July 25, 2010.
Perhaps Comic-Con will also provide news of which actress is set to play the lead role in the big screen version of DC Comics Wonder Woman.
