Capcom is a company known for fighting games. After all, they did single-handily popularize the genre with the release of the classic Street Fighter II. They are also responsible for the successful Darkstalkers and Rival Schools series.
Aside from the mainline Street Fighter series, Capcom also developed several spin-off titles. One of which is a crossover fighting series between Capcom and another big company with recognizable characters. The most popular of which is the Marvel vs. Capcom series. The comic book company has produced several memorable characters throughout the years. Thus, Marvel was a perfect fit for Capcom.
The first game that resulted from the collaboration was X-Men vs. Street Fighter on the arcade (1996), Sega Saturn (1997) and Playstation (1998). Unlike most fighting games, X-Men vs. Street Fighter has a tag-team system, a feature that will return in later titles.
After the success of the first game, Marvel and Capcom released Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter on the same exact systems. Starting in 1999, they released the third game, Marvel vs. Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes, on the arcade, Playstation and Sega Dreamcast.
They series really took off in popularity with the launch of Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes on the arcade, Sega Dreamcast, Playstation 2 and Xbox starting in 2000. The enormous cast of the most recognizable characters in the comic and gaming worlds in addition to the tweaked gameplay made the 2D fighting game an instant classic. Throughout the years, Marvel vs. Capcom 2 became a much sought after title with high value.
After seeing the high demand, Capcom decided to give Marvel vs. Capcom 2 an enhance port for the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. The newest version (which is based on the Sega Dreamcast port) features enhanced graphics in addition to the new online gameplay.
The wait won't be too long now as Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is set to be released on the Xbox Live Arcade of the Xbox 360 on July 29, followed by a release on the Playstation Network of the Playstation 3 shortly thereafter. The highly anticipated game will cost 1200 Microsoft Points on the Xbox Live Marketplace and $14.99 on the Playstation Store.
