Mary Avenue and Central Expressway: A Dangerous Intersection in Sunnyvale
Neighborhood: Sunnyvale

Do you ever commute through Sunnyvale, on Mary Ave at Central Expressway, and wonder why the traffic is stopped? This section of road is famous, with commuters, for always having an accident either blocking the intersection, or in clean-up mode. Every time I travel through this road, I am a bit wary about how many people run the red lights. From a story I got from a friend last month, I now have reason to be.

A friend of mine was commuting home, from a normal day at work, when someone ran a red light speeding through on Mary Ave. The collision had such force that my friend's sedan flipped in the middle of the intersection. The car was totaled but he was able to walk away. The next day, when I drove through, I saw a pile of glass in the middle of the road and immediately got goose bumps.

I hope anyone who reads this will realize that speeding through a red light will not gain any of us extra time, but instead, possible injuries and debt for life. When I am the first car in line and the light turns green, I count 1-2-3 and then drive off. Yes, I get honked at, but I would rather get a honk and a dirty look than get T-boned. I also make it a habit to let bigger trucks go first; to be my shield.

Have you ever run a red rushing to work? Don't worry; I am guilty of it, too. It happens to everyone, but if we all are a bit more cautious, we can prevent the accidents from ever happening.
