Mary Had a Little Lamb

Z.J. Ascensio
Mary had a little lamb, so they often say.

And it was true; she had a lamb, but he didn't want to play.

Mary tried her best to get him to smile and make merry.

But the lamb, you see, he wouldn't budge. And this upset poor Mary very.

She asked her lamb "why won't you play? Don't you want to have some fun?"

The lamb looked at her, shook his head, and responded "I'll have none."

Mary shrugged, kicked a rock, and decided to walk away.

Little did sweet Mary know her lamb didn't know how to play.

He wanted very badly to have someone who understood

Teach him how to have some fun, if only someone would.

"Maybe I'll ask Mary" he thought, "Maybe I'll give it a try."

But the lamb gave up that plan because the poor lamb was too shy.

Then the lamb had a great idea, this one a real jewel.

"If I need to learn something, I need to go to school!"

Mary often spoke of school and everything she'd learn.

"If Mary could do it, so can I! Even lambs deserve a turn!"

So the lamb made up his mind as he fell asleep in the hay.

He knew that he would need his rest to follow Mary the next day.

He awoke, left the barn, and hid behind a tree.

He did his very best to make sure nobody would see.

From far behind, but not too far, he followed dear Mary to school.

Little did our lamb friend know, this was against the rule.

Mary waited in the playground for the school bell to ring.

While she waited, she and her friends would often rhyme and sing.

They sang "Old McDonald" and "Sing a Song of Six Pence",

and then a boy cried out loud "Hey, look what's behind the fence!"

"Oh my goodness! Oh what fun!" exclaimed a girl named Ghram.

Everyone was so happy to see the little lamb.

The lamb was frightened and hid behind a slide painted green.

But by then it was too late. All the children had seen.

Mary tried to help the lamb and keep the children away.

But there were too far many, you see, who wanted to laugh and play.

They heard the familiar "ring ring ring". Playtime was now done.

But the children were so excited, no one listened, not one.

Ms. McSpham, from her desk, the coo-coo clock she eyed.

"Every child today is late! I need to look outside."

So the teacher went outside which proved to be prudent,

Because by doing this she learned the location of every student.

"What is the meaning of all this?" cried Ms. McSpham.

Then all the children said at once "It's Mary's little lamb!"

The teacher looked at Mary "I thought you knew better.

You are going to take your pet home and I'm writing your parents a letter!"

The lamb looked down embarrassed. This really burst his bubble.

Not only did he not learn a thing, but he got his friend Mary in trouble.

As the two walked home, both looking rather sad,

the lamb decided to ask "Mary, are you mad?"

"Well, I'm disappointed, but you are my friend.

No matter what you do or say, I'm with you to the end."

Then Mary said, as she looked up at the sky,

"You followed me to school today. Might I ask why?"

"Mary, I can't play." The lamb admitted now.

"I really, really want to, but I never learned how."

Mary smiled softly "So that's what caused this mess?"

"I wanted to tell you sooner," he said "but it's so hard to confess."

"Well, don't you worry, little lamb" Mary said with a smile.

"I will teach you how to play. I'll take just a little while."

The lamb caught on quickly. It only took a day.

From then on the two best friends would play and play and play!

So if anyone ever asks why the lamb followed Mary to school,

Please explain the real reason, don't let anyone try to fool.

For now you know why the lamb followed Mary that day.

He wasn't trying to cause a fuss. He just wanted to play!

Not sure what made me scroll down to your old work, but I found this and it was really cute. I could see it as a children's book. :)
