Mary J. Blige: A Born Again Christian Who Knows What She's Got

Kim Linton
Mary J. (Jane) Blige grew up listening to gospel music in the Pentecostal church she attended with her mother. However, it was her father who taught her how to sing. When she was 17, her mother's boyfriend gave several people copies of a Karaoke recording that she had made. Eventually, the recording caught the attention of Uptown Records and the rest is history.

This Grammy award winning artist has an incredible voice, and has been dubbed the "Queen of R&B." Her musical style is saturated with old school R&B, but somehow manages to sound fresh. Mary J. Blige seems to have a staying power in the industry that few ever achieve.

Some of Mary Jane's biggest hits include You Gotta Believe, I'm Going Down Cause You Ain't Around, and one that has surfaced again in recent iPod commercials, Work What You Got.

Apparently, one thing that Mary J. Blige has is Jesus.

She admitted on the Oprah Winfrey show that she became a born-again Christian a few years ago. According to Blige, the reason for her conversion was her boyfriend, who she described as a "godly man." They are now married and she is expecting her first child.

Oprah also took Mary Jane with her to South Africa when she opened her $40 million school for girls. Oprah lovingly describes her as a "bad girl gone good."

Some people have criticized Mary Jane for her extravagant life style by saying that as a Christian she should try to live a more humble life. She has responded to the criticism by declaring that she believes God wants her to "look good and have nice things."

It's refreshing to see a famous Christian who admits that they are not perfect. Mary J. Blige, according to some, drinks a bit of alcohol on occasion and still hangs out with her friends in the industry who are not all necessarily upstanding citizens.

I suspect that some Christians might have a problem with this kind of behavior. The funny thing is, if my memory serves me correctly, Jesus also had a little wine on occasion, and He usually was in the company of people who were reviled in His community.

Regardless of what some might think about her conversion, I was very excited to hear that she had become a Christian. I hope that she will be able to incorporate her faith into some of her new work. Hearing this woman sing the old hymns would be an amazing thing!

i admit i did not care for her when she first started. not so much into hip-hop and thought she was like the rest. but i recently saw her on american idol and realised what a beautiful woman she is. listened to some of new positive music, now i think she's awesome. what a change! only the Lord can do that in a person. i believe she is truly saved but needs to be careful not to cause others to stumble in the Faith. We are in the world but not of it. No condemnation on if she does have a drink but i pray in time she will go completely gospel.
Let's not pass judgment on her. As she grows in the knowledge of the Lord Jesus and in grace she will know what to do with what she possesses. What she has is accumulated through hard honest work unlike so many fraudulent tv "preachers" who pilfer from new and immature believers left and right!

So beautiful, see...Christians can be blessed and work in a "secular" industry and probably reach more non-believers by doing so. Good for you for writing about his and good for Mary J Blige for being brave enough to talk about something that often times gets people shunned from professional circles.

Tati: It's all about what's most important to you. Like you said, God doesn't care if we have nice things. All that He requires is that we are willing to give it all up if necessary. In the passage you are referring to (the rich man), Jesus put His finger on the one thing that He knew the man would not walk away from. It can be a bad relationship, our career, our fears, you name it. If we put anything before Him (including money and things) then it becomes idolatry. When God blesses people financially, He usually does it for a reason. Most often, He wants folks who are blessed to be a blessing to others. Whether they heed that call or not is between them and God. :)

I'm sorry, I'm sure I do not know much but wasn't there a passage in the bible in which a rich man approaches Jesus and asks what he can do to be saved? I think Jesus told him to sell everything he owned to the poor then he says that it is hard for rich people to get into heaven, harder than a camel passing through a needle? Knowing that you are a pastor, it'd be interesting to hear your opinion because surely he did not mean something so extreme? With no reference to Mary J Blige, In general I think God rewards us with nice things but I do believe it is wrong to be very materialistic. Five cars and ridiculously large mansions seem unnecessary considering the wealth can be used for more productive purposes . . .
