"Mary Kate Olsen Refuses To Smile For the Paparazzi".
Perhaps you to clicked through to a few waifish half smiles, and a gothic glare, or might have been too distracted by Britney's latest mama drama. Since the press seems to think this is critical news to be spread anywhere and everywhere, I thought an analysis of it was appropriate. Initially that analysis was short and sweet, yet right on target:
Who gives a damn?
Though it seemed apt, its not very fair to have you click through to four little words and leave you hanging. While reviewing my analysis about how the world feels like its going up in flames, if you bother to try to diversify your new sources, but media sources want to dip us in oily water, I realized I was wrong.
As I thought about how instead of caring about Lil' Miss Olsen's pearly whites, we should care that the Patriot Act strips us of fundamental rights, or that innocent civilians are being murdered in the name of US citizenry. We should care that 79,000 foreclosure actions were filed in the state of Ohio alone last year, and much more all over the United States. The oceans are rising, warm animals are heading north in "cold season", and oil and climate change are instigators for violence all over the world.
I can understand since it does feel like the world is on fire to want to slip into some nice cool nonsense for the brain. Its okay to want to relax and retreat for a bit to give ones mind body and soul some time to just be, without being bombarded. But Mary Kate's faux smile?
Youtube and Netflix can help with the need to veg out. Even stepping out onto your porch/yard/balcony and doing NOTHING but breathing in fresh air will do the trick. But what is relaxing or entertaining about a girl who won't smile for the cameras, and a handful of pictures. Not only is it boring, but the media is asking you to waste your time on some disgruntled paparazzi's grudge.
This is where you should get mad. You have so MUCH better things to do with your life, than to waste even 10 seconds on stories like these -- so much better things to read. We should all be offended in a world where political and worldly knowledge is back seated to a pair of celebrity lips, that the media wants to feed us this tasteless mashed up baby food for stories, and they expect us to eat it up happily.
Rupert Murdoch and his hired crew didn't just call you stupid or apathetic, as he has by bombarding us with stories about Britney and Paris Hilton. He didn't just insinuate that you are a jerk lacking compassion, that you all you care about is the mundane private lives of people who don't matter, while life, death, suffering, and peace are debated and decided in the four corners of the earth.
This particular story exposes what the media moguls really think of us:
Complete, Brain Dead Zombies, unable to pick anything entertaining, and willing to eat whatever air pretending to be gruel pretending to be mashed bananas is fed to us on a dirty spoon,
-- and never blinking in question.
I, for one, am disgusted by the dirty spoon and tasteless media air being shoved into my mouth, and nose and eyes and ears. I refused to read any more of these stories. I encourage you to stand up in a revolution with me. Pick your media, click your media. Ignore the stories that are useless. You can get first hand news from any country you like on the web. You can put pages into babblefish to translate and get it straight from the horses mouth. Check out Al Jazeera yourself, instead of being told what it says. If you're a Democrat, go to the Republican media to find out what they say, and vice versa with Republicans.
Check out Sundance, Youtube, and independent film sites (they're everywhere). Read, write, understand, breathe, dance, discuss, make art, pontificate science, be at peace, enjoy squirrels, spread random acts of kindness, better the world around you, draw, sing, learn, create.
But at least be moved. Stand up, be angry, and refuse to let them grind gray dirty sand into your brain anymore.
