Mary Tyler Moore

Mary Tyler Moore was one of the most successful television shows of the 1970s, running from 1970 to 1977. MTM was the first television show that was centered on an unmarried female executive, who was hired at a fictional Minneapolis television station. The trials and tribulations that she goes through was parallel to what many young women at the time were going through during the beginning of the women's liberation movement, such as the changing role of women in the workplace, gender relationships in the workplace, and relationships in general.

Mary's boss was feisty Lou Grant, superbly played by Ed Asner. Other cast members at MTM included her upstairs neighbor who becomes close friend Rhoda, played by Valerie Harper from 1970 to 1974, and her sophisticated landlord neighbor Phyllis played by Cloris Leachman from 1970 to 1975, all of which eventually got their own television shows.

An outstanding performance was always delivered by popular actress Betty White, as Mary's manipulative man-hungry co worker Sue Ann Nivens from 1973 to 1977, who always had her eyes on boss Lou Grant. Murray, played by actor Gavin MacLeod, gave a fine performance as the office worker who becomes Mary's best friend and confidant. Ted Baxter, played by Ted Knight, gives a fantastic performance as the goofy, bumbling, television anchorman who often gets the daily news stories mixed up, getting his co workers fuming mad at him..Ted's silly childish girlfriend Georgette was played quite well by actress Georgia Engel.

The exterior shots of the house where Mary supposedly lived were taken at a real house in Minneapolis,
which remained a popular tourist attraction for over a decade, as tour buses often passed by. Choosing Minneapolis was a good decision, as recently it was voted one of America's most livable cities.

Mary was widely praised for her decision to cancel the show while it was still on top.
