The Empowerment Center of Cambridge, MD, was packed the morning of January 16, 2012, after opening its doors early for its fourth annual Martin Luther King giveaway. The food for the event, prepared by members of the New Revived United Methodist Church (NRUMC) of Smithfield, was ready before the announced starting time of 11 AM, so the decision was made to start early. Steven Fisher of WBOC-TV said that at one point every seat had been taken and people were still in line sometime before noon.
The event which was for all people of Dorchester County was sponsored by the Pine Street Committee (PSC), Dorchester Elks Lodge 223, and the NRUMC.
NRUMC members had readied hot soups for the chilly day along with tasty desserts. Hot coffee was available thanks to Dorchester Elks Lodge 223. There was also an abundance of clothing donated by Dorchester County citizens.
"This is something I think we just ought to be doing. I was glad to be a part of it when it first started and I am glad to be a part of it now," said Octavene Saunders, coordinator of the giveaway. She said over 150 had been served soup before 2 p.m.
"I'm glad to be part of something that is giving back to the community," PSC board member Derek Wongus said. "This is something that I like to do and if God continues to bless me and give me the strength this is what I will continue to do, to contribute back to the community as they contributed to me in the past."
He continued, "I know that there are people that are less fortunate than me and if I can help in any way then that is what I will be doing. This is one of the reasons why I came on board with the Pine Street Committee because I saw what they were doing with their summer youth program, community cookouts and all of these things."
"This is what people should be doing, if they can, that is, give back to the community that has given to them. This little bit of time that I am spending here today can never make up for what this community has done for me," he said.
