Masa and Dun

Kristin Hawkins
In a land far away there existed two kingdoms. They were the People of the North and the People of the South. Now these two kingdoms, which were once at peace, had yet again found themselves at war for the last 1000 years. It was after this long time that they no longer realized the reason for the constant battles, but they still went on fighting from the bitterness of their hearts.

One young warrior was just beginning his training to be a knight for the People of the North. His name was Masa, and he was drafted into it against his own will.

One day he was doing a practice sword fight with one of his closest friends, Dun. Dun was also drafted, but, unlike Masa, he had a passion for the war ever since his childhood.

"You're not trying hard enough," said Dun.

"I'm tired of this, Dun," replied Masa.

It was at that point that Dun knocked Masa's sword out of his hand. He then backed up and pointed his own sword straight at Masa's chest. Masa raised his arms up in surrender.

"Can't we do something else?" asked Masa.

Dun lowered his sword. Masa lowered his arms. Dun then put his sword back into its scabbard at his side.

"I am ashamed of you, Masa!" replied Dun. "We are training to defend our people. It is an honor to fight for the People of the North."

"For what, Dun? For what?" replied Masa. "Why keep on this fighting? It has happened for all our lives! What did the People of the South even do? What are we fighting about, Dun?"

Dun walked over to Masa.

"They are bad, Masa," began Dun. "They continue to kill our people. They have hate within their hearts, and it is driving them towards this violence. We have to defend our people. We want peace, but they won't allow it."

Masa felt a bit of anger at the moment.

"Don't you see that within our own people's hearts as well, Dun?" replied Masa.

"Pick up your sword, Masa," replied Dun angrily. "And be ready for more training tomorrow. We will be fighting in that battle in 60 days."

"No," replied Masa. "Enough of this! I'm finished with this nonsense!"

At that moment they heard a sound in the bushes.

"What was that?" asked Masa.

"I don't know," replied Dun. "Do you want to take the first look or should I?"

"You look," replied Masa fearfully. "I'll stay here and look out for anything else suspicious."

"Okay," replied Dun as he inched slowly over to the bushes.

As soon as he looked, he saw a young warrior jump out and begin running.

"It's a spy from the People of the South!" yelled Dun. He then got out his sword from its scabbard and began running after the young spy.

"Let him go!" yelled Masa.

"No!" yelled Dun.

It was at that point that Masa ran after Dun and caught him by the legs. They both fell down at that point. Luckily, the sword flew out of Dun's hand and to nearby a tree.

"What are you doing?" screamed Dun. "He's the enemy! Not me!"

Masa quickly turned Dun onto his back and pinned his arms to the ground.

"Listen to me!" replied Masa. "This war needs to stop, and the only way to do that is by being the first ones to stop fighting! They think the same thing we do on this! We can do the right thing first!"

"You're out of your mind, Masa!" replied Dun.

He then forced Masa's strength to weaken enough to push him back and onto the ground. Dun then stood up and grabbed his sword. He quickly put it back into its scabbard.

"Goodbye, Masa," said Dun. "I will refer you to a doctor. He will get you to thinking correctly."

Dun then left Masa where he was and walked off. Masa felt sadness in his heart, but he felt the strength to defend what he knew was right for his people. He eventually got up and left as well.
