Mascara Review: Avon's SuperSHOCK Intense Mascara
Is Avon's SuperSHOCK Intense Mascara Really Intense?
I am a huge fan of Avon's SuperSHOCK Mascara, which comes in black in the original formula. I will try any color in eyeshadow, eyeliner and mascara so when I found out that one of my favorite mascaras came in two new colors as SuperSHOCK Intense Mascara, I had been dying to try it. So, when SuperSHOCK Intense came on sale for $1.99 a tube I had to purchase a tube in each color to try them out.
Avon SuperSHOCK Intense Product Description
The mascara comes in a short, fat tube with a huge brush in two colors: Intense Sapphire and Intense Emerald. At Avon's online store the only description given is as follows:
"Tinted to enhance your eye color. .35 oz. net wt. All Avon mascaras are hypoallergenic and ophthalmologist-tested."
The ingredients are similar to that of the original Avon SuperSHOCK formula, so it is easy for one to assume that the Intense formula will perform the same as the original.
My Results Following the Packaging Instructions
Unfortunately, SuperSHOCK Intense does not perform the same as the original formula. I tested the Intense Emerald since green looks good on my eyes. When I opened the tube, the first thing that I noticed was different between the Intense and the original SuperSHOCK mascara was how thick it was. I pumped the brush in the tube thinking that maybe it needed to be loosened or something. However, the mascara was still very thick, but I decided to try it anyway. I applied the two to three coats the instructions gave for best results. I ended up with green tinted lashes that stuck together and looked like short tarantula legs!
I was not happy with this result. With the original formula, my lashes appear thicker, longer with no clumps. SuperSHOCK Intense left my lashes looking shorter than what they are and clumped together. I immediately washed off the mascara and decided to apply it my own way.
My Results After A Little Application Tweaking
I tried SuperSHOCK Intense Avon's way, now it was time for me to tweak the mascara application a bit. I decided that I needed to wipe off some of the extra mascara that comes out on the brush. After I did that, I was more pleased with the results. I still did not have the lengthening effect of the original formula but my lashes no longer looked like short, green tarantula legs.
Here's how I did it:
- Remove mascara wand from tube.
- Glide mascara brush down the edge of the tube opening to remove some of the excess mascara.
- Take a clean tissue (use the cheap kind that has no lotion and feel more like paper) and wipe off the rest of the extra mascara from the brush.
- Apply one coat to lashes.
- Pump wand in tube and repeat steps two through four for the second coat.
- After you apply the second coat apply to the lower lashes (Do not put more mascara on wand for the lower lashes).
I you want a third coat just repeat the same steps for applying the second coat.
While I will still purchase this mascara whenever it comes on sale, I do not think it is worth paying the full retail price of $8.50. The formula of SuperSHOCK Intense is not on par with the original, so if you love SuperSHOCK original the Intense formula will be a disappointment for you. If you have the patience to follow the instructions I gave, then SuperSHOCK Intense won't be a wasted purchase. However, if you do not have the patience to follow the extra steps I took, then even on sale, this mascara may be a waste of money for you.
