Masquerade

A Poem

L. Lee Scott
We put on masks for the theater of day:
Tragedy and comedy, joy and despair.
We learn early to cover our feelings,
Hide them will beneath the mask.

Vulnerability is cause for shame,
So mask it with a show of strength.
Take what comes
And roll with it.

Safe behind the masks
We navigate through rocks and shoals,
Never letting on, never dropping the mask --
They'll hurt you if they know you care.

Deep beneath the masks
Lie true feelings.
If they're hidden too long,
Will the play become the truth?

What mask will you choose today?

Everyone, at some points in their lives, wear don masks. I, unfortunately, wear a smile much too often.
Great work. I am enjoying your pieces.

I can really relate to this one. I saw the boyfriend of a young girl who died this morning after being in a tragic car crash 2 dies after her open house reception for graduation. They took her off life support last night she was brain dead. He was a Wendy's, and a friend I was with said he didn't look that upset. He was with 3 other kids, they were all silent and stone faced. I told her he was in shock. Many many masks we wear.

You've got my neurons thinking, Laurel! It's hard to tell how one feels when one spends so much time on 'how one is suppose to feel' indeed, ay? But then.... it ain't simple co-existing in a community with all of its 'traditions'. Thanks for another thought-provoking gem, matie! :o)

An excellent criticism of modern life.I have a quote from our language.Tamil.
When the masks have become our usual faces,is there a need for face?
