Masquerade Planning Tips

Party planning can definitely be a difficult task-just ask anyone who has ever been in charge of a large social gathering and they'll tell you this fact right away. However, these same people would also probably agree that once you have chosen a definite theme or direction for your party, things become drastically easier after that point. One fun party idea is that of a masquerade ball. Elegant, classy, and fun for both females and males alike, masquerades are a great get-together idea for larger group gatherings, like college wing social events. For anyone who is considering planning an old fashion type masquerade, here are a few ideas to get you started.

Since most of these type of events are fundraisers for some sort of program, make the night of the mask easier on all of your attendees by offering undecorated masks for an additional (but affordable) fee with their purchase of a ticket. Many craft stores offer these in bulk, and you may even be able to work out a deal with the store for a discounted purchase. This way most of your attendees will have a convenient way of creating their masks without having to go out of their way to purchase one. You may also want to consider offering several pictures/brochures with sample mask ideas to give them some inspiration on how to decorate their masks.

At the actual event, try to provide a variety of finger foods for consumption. This will give your guests a feeling of actually getting "something" for the price of their ticket, and it will provide a place/activity for those guests who would rather not dance all night long. Small quiches, miniature cheesecakes, chips and dips, miniature éclairs, and cream puffs are all great ideas. A punch bowl usually will serve as adequate beverage, but you may also want to offer a pitcher of water for your guests.

While the dancing portion of the ball will vary from masquerade to masquerade, it is generally a good idea to provide your attendees with a variety of music, ranging from classical ballroom to swing dancing tunes to more modern music. This way, everyone will have at least one song that they enjoy dancing to. If you're having a difficult time getting people out on the dance floor, try playing a well known group dance song, such as the electric or cha-cha slide. Another fun idea is to provide all of your female guests with a "dance card" when they arrive at the door. Traditionally, such cards would be tied to ladies' wrists and gentlemen would have to write their name on the dance card if they wished to dance with a lady. Although old fashion, this activity can be a fun twist to your masquerade.
