Massachusetts Inmate Darrell Jones Speaks Out Against Prison Abuse and Racism

Jones is Put in Solitary Confinement the Next Day

Dee
Darrell Jones, a prisoner at Old Colony Correctional Center (OCCC), a Massachusetts medium security facility kept notes, documents, and writings about the injustices he saw going on behind the walls. He thought he was doing the right thing by reporting the things he felt mattered. He stated he wrote all his complaints down and kept to himself. He states "His whole issue was to get the issues that mattered the most to prison commissioner Harold Clarke." Clark was quoted saying at an earlier date "'We are looking at over two million people incarcerated' nationally, [Clarke] says. 'If we fail to respond to their needs, they will go out and create more victims." by columnist Tobey Frost. More can be read here.

In an audio recording, Jones speaks about the things that were going on at OCCC. Some of his complaints and issues, according to Minethatbirdmedia website were that he questioned the CRA programs, and toastmasters programs. He talks about favoritism among the inmates, and one group of inmates being used against another. He states his paperwork was denied and stolen. He also requested cameras be installed in "safe" areas where inmates where getting in fights, and where officers would "get in your face". Jones reports guards playing games on computers, and being on the phone all day.

He also reports no money granted for programs, videos, etc. He claims the African Heritage program was closed, the only black program which had the most members. He states this program was closed for no reason. He also claims they "used my son as a tool against me."

He alleges the retaliation against him was to "cover up what they are doing," and that "someone is trying to turn this system upside down." More can be heard on the audio recordingherehere.

rd here, that he did everything the right way, but was still punished for it.

Darrell Jones has been noted in the past for his work with other inmates at OCCC in attempts to get them to admit and apologize to their victims for the crimes they committed. According to "The Bulletin Newspapers" He and several other inmates can be viewed on a video by The Center for Teen Empowerment called Voices from Behind the Wall, which was Jone's idea. "In February, The Bulletin profiled Jones' attempts to work with community leaders and politicians on ways inmates can help end the cycle of youth violence by demystifying and de-glorifying the myths about prison life." More on that article can be read here.

People are urged to go to The MinethatbirdMedia website and listen to the audio tapes recorded by Darrell Jones. Jones has since been transfered from OCCC to another dessachusetts Prison.

I worked in the visiting room from time to time back then, and Jones actually had 3 girls he saw regularly, a spanish girl from New Bedford who always brought in her young son, that Marinova girl- who the article is about, and a third chubby curly haired girl. They all came in at different time of the week, and Jones was making out with all of them. He was always too free with his hands when he could get away with it- specially when the room was really crowded. I always felt sorry for that little boy who had to sit there for hours. Of course cause this is negative it will be dismissed as character assassination- even if it the truth

I've had dialog with DJ, it doesn't take long to see he's very egocentric, the defamation and truth twisting is done on his part, like saying the officers were on the phone all the time- of course they are, an officer spends a great deal on the phone because they're answering calls to send inmates down to psych services, their jobs. checking on their canteen and medical appnts. the prisons cater and service the inmates thru the phones constantly- the point is this is just one of the topics that dj twists and misrepresents what's going on for his own benefit. I believe his underlaying goal is to be set free (for murder) helping society is a sham, which he is very good at

Prison, although it must play apart is not the way to make society safer. Addressing the issues which result in negative life choices is the way to reform and rehabilitate. What a waste of human potential and resources to keep people locked up for years making them less and less fit to use their talents and skills and contribute to society. Thanks for the article.

Yes you can believe a convicted murderer whom I believe is innocent. There is a huge coverup and much defamation going on, take time to read:

I know some inmates in ma and some people who work there, according to them- from both sides..this guy has his own self interest in mind, ie,..look at all he's claimed to do "lets pardon him". If people think prisons are horrible they should go to other countries

  • barbera10/12/2009

It all sounds very hair raising..if you can believe a convicted murderer

Awesome write up! I hope people get the "it isn't a vacation" mode of thinking out of their head. Some prisons are like country clubs but others are barbaric.
