MASSACRE in CORDOBA

Scotland Are Given the Beating of Their Lives by Peru

Cordoba: Scotland v Peru: 1978
World Cup First Round: 3rd June 1978:

Never had a dream albeit mad been so cruelly crushed. Ally Macleod's Tartan army were turning a worrying crimson purple as the swaggering, white-shirted Peruvians with the blazing red sash stormed forward in search of a killer third goal. Macleod's crazed pre-tournament assertion that Scotland would be world champions were rightly viewed as the rantings of a madman.

An over-confidence bordering on arrogance as he even refused the opportunity to watch Peru live. Instead relying on second/third hand accounts and the odd blurry videotape. As Munante, Oblitas, Cueto and the thrilling Teofillio Cubillas ripped his side to shreds the 2-1 scoreline did no justice to the footballing lesson Peru were giving Scotland in Cordoba.

After a relatively bright start with an early goal from Joe Jordan, the South Americans slowly built up a head of steam to the point where with just thirteen minutes remaining, Peru were toying with Macleod's ragged, embarrassed side. And still they teased and tormented.

Cueto's wonderful defence-splitting pass released the gust of wind Munante to race clear towards Alan Rough's goal. Heartily sick of trailing in the Peruvian winger's wake Aberdeen defender Stuart Kennedy scythed him down on the penalty area edge. A free-kick in a position heaven made for Teofillio Cubillas. The main sharpshooter in this remarkably attacking expansive team.

Cubillas had the opportunity to put the Scots out of their misery and give this Massacre in Cordoba a fitting finale. Typical of their hapless ineptitude throughout Scotland put two of their smallest players on the edge of the wall, thus making it relatively straight forward for Peru's magical number ten.

So it was Cubilllas thrashed a stunning drive high into the corner past a shell-shocked Rough. Three goals to one and justice properly served. Ally Macleod's Scotland had been handed the beating of their lives.
