Massage Therapy Basics

Massage therapy is an ancient healing art that's been practiced for thousands of years. This system of healing involves the systematic massaging of the muscles and soft tissues of the body. The massage therapist, primarily uses their hands during the massage, but may also use their forearms, elbows, feet or a special massage instrument.

Because massage therapy is based on the specific needs of the individual, it is an appropriate form of treatment for adults and children alike. Massage therapy can be relaxing or invigorating. It increases circulation, reduces pain, aids in stimulating the nervous system and increases the flow of oxygen in our blood stream. Massage therapy is further beneficial in reducing stress and in providing us with an overall sense of relaxation and personal well-being.

Massage therapy comes in many different modalities. In fact, there are over 80 different forms of this ancient healing art. Examples of the more recognized forms of massage therapy include:

  • Thai Massage

  • Reiki

  • Swedish

  • Pressure Point Massage

  • Deep Tissue Massage

  • Shiatsu

Any form of massage therapy can be enhanced and complimented with other alternative therapies. A popular choice is to include aromatherapy in order to enhance and maximize the beneficial aspects of the massage.

As a rule, there are no known side effects or risks associated with massage therapy. Sometimes, depending on the type of massage, a person may experience some pain, swelling or bruising in the area massaged. This is rare and will subside quickly.

Massage therapists are required to attend training and gain many hours of experience in order to become a professionally certified practitioner. When you decide on a practitioner, base your decision on that person's credentials and, where possible, recommendations from others.

Upon meeting, your massage therapist will require that you complete a health history. Complete this document with as much detail as possible and specifically inform your practitioner of any pre-existing conditions that you have. It is also important to tell the therapist if you have been the victim of any form of physical abuse.

Studies have shown that massage therapy is emotionally and physically positive and healing. Massage therapy helps to alleviate stress, improve sleep and may help in the release of endorphins in our brains. Massage therapy may help to block pain signals and increase our overall sense of health and well being. This healing art also provides emotional healing and support for the patient as their relationship with the massage therapist grows and strengthens.
