For millions of Americans, chronic pain is a very large problem. More people miss work each year because of chronic pain than any other common sicknesses.

While pain is a necessary part of life and it is normal to experience, chronic pain does not fade away. Pain becomes chronic after it lasts for a long period of time usually over six months. This can hang on for a long time and even a lifetime. It is important to understand that even though chronic pain is very different than acute pain and sickness it does not necessarily signify a problem with the body.

For many though chronic pain can signify a serious ongoing condition such as cancer, arthritis, or other health problems. Some causes and problems of chronic pain include those of carpal tunnel, back injuries, and migraine headaches. A lot of pain is caused by injury to nerves which send false signals to the brain. This can cause the brain to become overly sensitized and unable to break the cycle.

One such treatment option with chronic pain is that of massage. Massage targets the specific area that is affected in a specific manner and can help aid in the healing process.

With pain there is a vicious cycle of muscle contraction. What occurs is the muscles around the injured area become tightly contracted in order to protect the injured area. This can cause less blood to flow into the area and starving it of oxygen. In addition, contracted muscle contains numerous toxins that are very horrible to the body. What massage is effective in doing is loosening constricted muscles around the injured area allowing for an increase in blood flow and the flushing out of all the painful toxins.

With chronic pain there could potentially be a nerve that is in trapped in a tight muscle. By loosening this muscle nerves can release and pain can be lessened.

Massage also aids to raise levels of serotonin which is important to help make the body feel good. By using massage in your treatment of chronic pain you can help release any tight muscles that could be causing the pain. With the drugs, medications, and other treatment strategies, this problem would never be corrected and the pain could continue indefinitely.

There are many different types of massages that are practice in an effort to treat chronic pain. One such type is that of cranial sacral therapy in which it is believed that it is possible to move bones within the body. There are numerous forms of massage that could potentially be effective for you as the pain sufferer. When looking into types of massages therefore it is important to understand that there are differences and you should find someone you feel comfortable with giving you a massage.

Even so, massage therapy is only one approach to you'll chronic pain. There are many other approaches that are often necessary to help aid in the process. It is important to discuss with your doctor various treatment strategies and also adapt lifestyle changes.
