Mastering Joomla: How to Install and Use Mediawiki on Your Joomla Website
A Step-by-Step Tutorial on Installing Mediawiki on Your Site
With MediaWiki, you can edit pages online and check pages instantly, so there is no need for an FTP client to manage your files. MediaWiki can also be used by people working on the same project, because authors can collaboratively edit and add data on the wiki page.
MediaWiki is the wiki software used to run Wikipedia, one of the Internet's highest traffic-generating websites ever. Given the fact that MediaWiki is a separate content management system in its own right, it unfortunately cannot be integrated with the Joomla content management system.
Step #1
In order to install MediaWiki on your website, you first need to have a wiki hosting account. Wiki hosting accounts are offered on SiteGround: www.siteground.com.
Step #2
Once you have created a wiki hosting account, you can now begin installing MediaWiki on your website. You need to first download the MediaWiki application from www.mediawiki.org/wiki/download.
Step #3
With the MediaWiki application downloaded, you will then need to upload the file onto your wiki hosting account via File Transfer Protocol, or FTP.
Step #4
Once uploaded, you need to create a new database using your cPanel account. After the database is created, you need to add a username and password for your new database.
Step #5
You can now open your site by navigating to www.domainname.com/mediawikidirectory or www.domainname.com if you uploaded the files directly to the public_html folder.
Step #6
Once you have opened your new wiki page, you need to fill in the required information regarding your wiki.
*You type in the name of your website under Site Name.
*On the contact e-mail field, type in your email address.
*Then you need to select the language in which you want MediaWiki installed on.
*On Sysop account name and password, you need to fill in the administrative login details.
Step #7
The next page will be the database configuration page.
*Under MySQL server type in "localhost."
*Then you need to type in the name of the database you created on the Database Name field.
*After that, you need to input the username and password in the respective fields.
*On Database table prefix, type in "mx_".
*Do not alter the Database charset
*Leave the DB root password blank.
Step #8
After all of the information is properly filled out, you can now click Install to begin installation. After installation you will be asked to move the config/LocalSettings.php file into the parent directory. You can do this by using your FTP client or using cPanel's File Manager.
And you are done!
