Masters of War Revisited: A Poem

Behind Every War, There Are People Getting Rich

David A. Reinstein, LCSW
In well pressed stealth,
Mongers of destruction
Creep into boardrooms
In the guise of good and noble,
Ambitious and successful,
Admired and well rewarded
Businessmen and women.
Unconcerned with the human
Consequences of their
Rabid profiteering,
They joke and laugh,
Drink and toast,
Grin and pat each other
On their backs.
Congratulatory gestures
And comments abound.
Icons of the great god dollar
Are earned and banked,
Invested and grown,
Hoarded and hidden
Until the time comes
For celebration
Marked by
Conspicuous consumption,
Excessive indulgences
And the sharp gloating of
Monetary success.
Is there something wrong
With this picture?

Glad to have interested a reader in poetry - at least in my version of it. Thank you, Phyllis!

A confession. I don't care for poerty. Generally, I don't get it. So when I get a message that a friend has witten a poem, I usually just skip over it and move on. However, in the past weeks as my messages have come in that you have written another poem, I started telling myself, "I can take a quick peek and rate it. It won't kill me." Well, David, you have won me over. I have never read poetry like yours before. You tell a tale of the here and now. Most of your poems are like reading a news report in time.
