Math Lesson Plan: Converting Decimals & Fractions into Percents

Will T.
Objective: Students will be able to change decimals and fractions into percents.

Lesson Opening

  1. Since the marking period is coming to a close, we will have to once again do a writing exercise for each of our four subjects. In math, you are going to do a survey, and then you'll have to write your answer as a fraction, decimal and a percent. Therefore, it is very important that you know how the three are related.
  1. Today we are going to look at exactly that. Yesterday, we estimated, but today, we are going to learn how to figure it out mathematically.

Guided Practice

  1. Can anyone remind me what a percent is? Remember, just like a fraction, it is a part of a whole.
  1. Percents range from 0% (nothing) to 100% (all). Half is equal to 50%. If we take this square (think of it as a cake) and divide it into 100 pieces, then each piece is equal to one percent.
  1. Shade in different percentages. Then remind them that they know how to find a decimal and a fraction from looking at such a diagram. In this way, show them how to find a percentage from a fraction or a decimal.
  1. Explain to the children that if you want to find the percentage from a fraction, you need to make that fraction out of 100. If you want to find the percentage from a decimal, you need to multiply by 100.

Independent Practice

  1. Have the children complete a table with percentages, decimals and fractions.
  1. When they are finished with that, have them complete the word problems on the back of the sheet. Stress the fact that the word problems are almost exactly the same as the table, you just need to decipher them first.

Closing

  1. Ask students to share their answers.
