Lesson Objective: Students will be able to divide two digit numbers and understand the concept of remainders.
Lesson Opening- Refer back to yesterday's lesson on long division. Ask them questions to bring back the issue of sharing. Ask them if they ever tried to share things, but it didn't work exactly as they had hoped.
- Remind the children about flashcards.
- You need candy for this one. Invite a child to the front of the classroom and tell the class that you are giving him twelve Hershey's kisses. Then ask another child to join him in the front and ask them to share the kisses. They did this yesterday with 3,4, 6 and 12 children up to the front until they get the idea. Today, have them do it with 5 or 7 or some weird number and see how they share. Explain the concept of remainder.
- Put a long division problem on the board (72/15 = 4 R 12) Explain what you do with the leftover number. Have them write the remainder at the end with an uppercase R and then the number.
- Show them how to check the answer with multiplication. This is particularly difficult if you are working with a remainder.
- Repeat steps two and three with a different problem, but this time have them lead you through it.
- Give the students practice problems to do on their own. Have them work in pairs, doing the work independently and then checking each other.
- Return one more time to the sharing concept. Ask the children what they think the fairest thing to do with the remainder is.
- Explain how in real life, the government sometimes has money left over, and they have to decide which cause they should give the money to.
