Objective: Students will review fraction skills in preparation for the test.
Lesson Opening
- This is the first of two review days in preparation for Tuesday's test. Even if for some reason you hadn't been paying attention in class at all (and I know that isn't true of any of these students) you could still do quite well on the test if you focused for these two days.
- This lesson will require you to be willing to move around and talk with other students. It will also be necessary for you to able to accept and give advice, and to stay focused when being taught by someone other than me.
- I have chosen to run class this way for two reasons. One, I believe that many teachers are better than one. Second, I believe you will find this fun. If you have difficulty handling this, we will do the same assignment, but we will do it as a silent exercise with you in your seats.
Guided Practice
- Today we are going to review five important skills: subtracting mixed numbers, adding mixed numbers, simplifying, and turning improper fractions is mixed numbers and turning mixed numbers into improper fractions.
- At each of the five tables you will find five problems and a student teacher. Each table has a color that corresponds to your worksheet. When you get to the table, you should sit down and start doing the problems.
- The person at the table is an expert at that specific skill. He/she was picked because he/she was willing to stay late or during lunch. I am sure several of the rest of you could teach this skill as well.
- If you sit down and complete your work, you can ask the teacher if you got it right. If you get them all right, you may move to the next table. If you do not, you may want to ask the teacher for help. Teachers, you may not give help unless it has been asked for!
- You are all required to complete all the problems. Teachers, if no one is at your table, you are expected to do work from other tables until someone shows up. You may go in any order you want, but it makes sense to go where the least people are so you can get the most attention. Do not go where your friends are!
Independent Practice (23)
- The rest of this lesson will be done with centers. Students who have stayed after school for help will be given "teaching positions at each one of the table "schools." In order to graduate from a table, each teacher must look at a student's and initial it. Each table will test the students' skills in a slightly different manner.
- I will hover from each of the five tables, offering instruction where necessary. This format allows me an excellent opportunity to informally assess my students, because it is often easy to tell how well a student is doing by his or her interaction with the students who are helping him.
Closing
- How did you like this manner of learning?
