Math Lesson Plan: Multiplying Two Digit Numbers

Will T.

Lesson Objective: Students will be able to multiply two digit numbers.

Lesson Opening (2)

  1. Remind children the importance of making and doing flashcards.
  1. Write a two digit multiplication problem on the board (54 x 27). Ask the second teacher what the answer is. He or she can't do it. Ask that person what college he/she went to. Explain that here is a college-educated person who can't do two digit math in his/her head. (2 minutes)

Introduction of New Material (21)

  1. Ask the children how we are going to approach this problem if we can't do it in our heads like simpler problems. Ask questions to get them to explain that you need to break it down into smaller parts. (2)
  1. Start on the two digit problem. Have different students talk you through it. They have already had it, so at least some students will understand the theory. Explain how to carry the tens digit to the next line. Explain that on the second line, you have to add a zero. (10)
  1. As a small digression, explain how when you are multiplying by a multiple of ten, you can drop the zero and then add it at the end. Show how 54 x 27 is actually equal to 54 x 7 + 54 x 20. If you have time, you can spend a few minutes explaining how 5 x 200 is as easy to do as 5 x 2. (3)
  1. Do another example on the board in similar fashion. (81 x 36) (6)
Student Practice of New Material (18)
  1. Divide the class down the middle. Give them a problem to do (44 x 29) Have one half of the class do 44 x 9 and have the other half do 44 x 2. Add up both halves on the board. (10)
  1. Give them all a full problem to do by themselves (65 x 31). If there is time, do another (78 x 52) (8)
Lesson Closing (4)
  1. If there is time, play the multiplication math game. I doubt there will be. (12)
  1. Homework: five two digit math problems: 45 x 33, 91 x 11, 28 x 37, 22 x 22, 53 x 68. Have them do two more sets of flashcards. (4)
