Math Tutoring for High School Students

Alternative to Hiring a Tutor

Tom Lewis
Is your son or daughther struggling with their High School studies? Particularly, are they struggling in their math class? If so, spend the next 5 minutes reading this article for a few helpful suggestions from an actual High School Math teacher that has advised many parents and students on what to do for a little extra help with their studies outside of the classroom.

Now the obvious suggestion is to hire a tutor to work with your son and daughter in a one-on-one format. Unfortunately, not everyone has the extra money to spend and even if they do, it can sometimes be difficult finding a tutor that is qualified in several different content areas.

If your son or daughter is a good independent learner, then an excellent source may be www.hippocampus.org. This site really does it all and the best part is that it is 100% free! The key is with this site is your child must be a self-motivated person, or you need someone watching over them and checking their progress as they go. This site has many subjects listed on its side panel, such as: Algebra, Biology, American Government, Calculus, Statisics, and....you get the point, the list goes on for awhile!

I do not have a lot of experience dealing with the other subjects on hippocampus, but if they are anything like the math courses then they are fantastic! For instance, I have told many students that have been absent from school for an extended period of time to go to this site and check out the Algebra subject. First off, it breaks Algebra 1a and 1b down into easy to understand sections. The sections contain a warmup (review) question, notes for the lesson topic, and practice problems as well. The best part of each section is that there is actually a narrarator that guides your child through the lesson. So it's really the next best thing to having an actual adult by your child's side to tutor them on the subject.

There is also another site called www.freerice.com. This site concentrates on the basics a little bit more. In my opinion, this site would be an excellent source for any student to keep their mind sharp during the summer break. This site does not go into detail like hippocampus, but it does help to keep their minds sharp. In reality, freerice is an excellent site for any age (mine included)!

But before you go out and spend globs of money on a fancy tutor (who is no guarantee to help), have your child check out hippocampus.org and see if it works for them.
