Matt Giraud Gets the Save on American Idol, but Who Will Survive Disco Week?

Gerald McConway
Wow, what a great elimination show! It started out with the contestants doing a very entertaining song, but that was your first feeling that Matt was going to be put on the spot. With only 7 contestants remaining, Matt was chosen to be the centerpiece of the group performance. It just gave you a bad feeling that Matt was going to the giving his farewell song.

As Ryan started calling off contestants, there was little doubt that the bottom row of the couch was going to be in some serious trouble. First Allison got a pass and then of course Adam got the ticket to remain on the safe couch. A mild surprise was that Anoop landed back down in the bottom three and it is becoming painfully clear that he has not gained the fan base to remain on this show much longer. He gave one of his best performances of the season and it was still not enough to keep him out of those chairs. At this point, it would be a surprise to see him last any longer than Final Five.

While I was not impressed with the performance of Kris Allen on April 14, the bulk of the judges and his incredible fan bass disagreed. In all honesty, that is a great thing because he is extremely talented and has a long career in the music industry ahead of him. Personally, I would love to see him get back to something lively next week as that is where I think he is at his best. Kris was standing with Lil which meant that she was heading to the dreaded 3 seats.

Lil has talent, but she is going to need some help. She obviously struggles with arrangements, but will have an opportunity to let loose next week during "Disco Week." This may be the week that we have all been waiting for because she has every right to be in the top 5 vocally, it is the other aspects of her performances that are hurting her. I mentioned in an earlier article that it would probably be down to her and Matt but honestly thought she would have been the one to go. Her people rallied though and barely kept her alive.

Danny Gokey gave a good performance on Tuesday night, but I agreed with Simon that it was disappointing in that we have come to expect more from him. It was a sigh of relief when he was told he was going to be safe because he is another one of the singers that deserves to make it through to the final couple of shows. This kid has a strong fan base and will continue to give Adam and Kris a run for their money. He is actually probably Adam's main competition because of his charisma on stage. When he is on, he is deadly.

Matt Giraud was the last member of the couch to head to the chairs and was actually voted off the show. He got a reprieve when the judges used their one save of the season and I have a feeling that he will make the most of it. Simon took a shot at him by telling him that he has no shot, but the important thing is that he is still alive. There are no more safety nets for any of the performers now and they are all going to have to be perfect from here on out.

With Disco Week being next, you can almost see who is going to fall. Adam Lambert has proven that he can sing anything and can have a lot of fun with it and will easily be safe next week. Kris Allen is another well rounded singer and I see him with a crowd of girls dancing with him and the votes piling in like never before. Disco is a song type that Matt will pull off. He has that groove in him and there is little doubt that he will use Simon's comments and the save as his inspiration.

The one performance to look forward to is going to be Danny Gokey. He can sing and he can dance and that is what Disco is all about. He has a great stage presence and should be right there with Adam for the performance of the week. It is unlikely that he will do anything other than bring down the house.

That is going to leave us with Allison Iraheta, Lil and Anoop sitting on the chairs one more time and the best prediction would be that Lil and Anoop are heading home after next week. The only reason I have Allison here is because this is not a genre that fits her singing. She does sultry rock and blues and asking her to sing this is going to be very tough. She has the talent to pull it off, but it will be a struggle. Regardless, she clearly has enough fans to pull her through a difficult week as long as she does not fall flat on her face.

Lil Rounds could go either way, but the best guess is that she will pick something from Donna Summer and keep it slow. This has been her practice from day one and there is little reason to think that she would deviate from it. We would all love to see her let loose and have the crowd on their feet, but it just does not seem to be in here. I can only hope that I am wrong and that she rubs it in the judge's faces.

In all honesty, Anoop Desai has no hope to survive Disco Week. It has been stated here many times that he simply does not have a stage presence and is very clumsy in his movements. It was proven again on the elimination show as he tripped walking down the steps and into the audience. Disco for the most part has the artist moving on the stage and he will not be able to pull it off. The only question really is who else will be joining him.

Its great to see you back Nina! I think Danny will be okay even with his 'polar expedition', lol. The thing with him is that he has fun and gets the crowd involved. The differnce is that he is comfortable with himself where you can see Anoop is almost terrified when he moves on stage. It has the chance to be one of the most entertaining shows of the season. I hate disco, but I am really looking forward to this one.

The Disco week could be troublesome for Danny because he cannot dance. he can sing, but we did see his 'polar expedition' dance and the horrible pelvic thrusts. Saving Matt has threatened Anoop's position, no doubt. Disco week can add to Lil's advantage.(if she makes use of it)

Well I am excited Matt has come this far, it is funny because his facial expressions seem to say he is surprised he has come this far, like he is trying to coverup the dumbfounded feeling. But I think he will soon realize he really is that good, after all he has the support of the entire area of South West Michigan, including me in Allendale which is about 60 miles north of his home town in Kalamazoo. Most exciting Idol for me thanks to Matt!!

I hope Matt keeps going. He so talented and deserves to be there in the finale.
