Matt Giraud: Not Worth Judges Save on American Idol

Matt Giraud Falls Short on Tuesday Night's Idol After Being Given a Second Chance

All eyes were on Matt Giraud on Tuesday night's American Idol after he was the first contestant to ever receive the coveted judges save. Unfortunately, due to a few great performances by other contestants and a not so great performance by Giraud, it doesn't appear that he did enough to keep him out of the bottom two for Wednesday's elimination.

The stakes were higher than ever on Idol this week for contestants. Because of the judges save used last week on Matt Giraud, the rules state that two contestants have to go home this week. To make things even more difficult, the theme this week was disco, not an easy task for a bunch of twenty somethings and a sixteen year old.

It's not that Matt Giraud is a bad singer or piano player, it's just that there are some way better singers like Danny Gokey and Alison Iraheta on American Idol this year. There are also more likable singers like Adam Lambert and Chris Allen. In my opinion, Allen and Lambert, who both went before Giraud, were the two standout performances on Tuesday night's Idol.

Matt Giraud, who was the second to last performer, sang "Stayin Alive" which seemed appropriate since he's struggling to stay alive in the competition. He sang OK, but added a lot of dance moves that made him look like he was having a seizure. Overall, it came off like he was trying to hard. He received mixed reviews from the judges when Paula Abdul predicted that he would be safe this week and Simon Cowell disagreed and said he didn't like it. I do like Giraud, but have to side with Simon on this one.

It really seems like he probably hit his peak when he sang Ray Charles way back in Hollywood week and that his time on American Idol has come to an end. He shouldn't be too sad though, I'm sure he has a career in music ahead of him, at least as a dueling piano player.

I'm glad that they used the judges save so they can stop talking about it at elimination. It just makes things even more awkward. I don't really think the save made one bit of a difference about who will go home. It just delayed the inevitable for Matt Giraud.
