Matt Lauer: Cheater

According to the National Enquirer, Matt Lauer is joining the ranks of famous men Tiger Woods, David Boreanaz and Jesse James. That's right, Matt Lauer has officially been accused of cheating on his wife of 12 years, Annette of the Today Show.

The Enquirer's source is none other than Annette's mother Johanna Struijk from the Netherlands, and she spilled that Matt has moved out of the New York apartment they live in after Annette's accusation that he cheated on not one, but two women. The Enquirer traveled to the Netherlands to do the story, and Johanna assured them that Annette had been doing well since the current split.

The alleged adultery took place while Matt Lauer was covering the Winter Olympics in Vancouver. While Matt claims he was in bed early, Enquirer sources dispute that. They say that Matt was out and "went wild" at nightspots.

For now, Matt is denying the story, telling People magazine that he hasn't moved out, and that the Enquirer story is false. However, Enquirer reporters have been keeping watch on the Lauer residence constantly, and Matt hasn't been seen leaving the apartment building in the mornings, indicating he's not staying there at all, since he shows up for work every day. Since they had seen Matt exit his building in the past, it appears that he's gone.

Annette has been staying in the apartment with the Lauer's three kids, and she is reported to be very happy. She has released a joint statement with her husband denying the allegations the National Enquirer has made.

Why would Matt and Annette avoid going public with the story if the rumors are true? The Enquirer's sources say that NBC wants Lauer to keep his image as a family man, since the viewers of his show prefer seeing him as such. A scandal such as divorce, especially complicated with adultery committed by him, would surely turn off some of those viewers.

Like everything in Hollywood, you can't always believe what you see or hear. Only time will tell if Matt did indeed cheat and if he and Annette will stay together. The odds do looked stacked against Matt's claims that he was faithful, however, with the claims combined with the lack of his presence at the apartment.
