Matthew Perry Shines Bright as Mr. Sunshine

Deb Martin-Webster
Who needs Friends? Not Matthew Perry. When it comes to this talented actor he's doing well on his own. He's back in a new ABC show called "Mr. Sunshine." After his lengthy role as the quick witted and quirky Chandler on Friends, Perry has finally returned to ABC television. He plays Ben Donovan the manager of a second rate sports/entertainment arena in San Diego called The Sunshine Center; a venue like The Meadowlands, minus the sophistication and budget.

The cast includes some of television familiar and accomplished actors. Allison Janney better known for her multi Emmy winning role as presidential press secretary C.J. Cregg on The West Wing plays Crystal Cohen the eccentric owner of the Sunshine Center. James Lesure as Alonzo is Perry's assistant and occasional rival. He is best known for his roles as Mike Cannon on the NBC comedy-drama "Las Vegas." Another very familiar face is Jorge Garcia who played Hugo Reyes or more commonly known by his nickname "Hurley" from the long running ABC series," LOST." Character actor Nate Torrence plays Crystal slightly estranged and naive son Romen Cohen who seems to forever be jointed at the hip of Ben Donovan. Torrence's long list of television credits including CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Malcolm in the Middle, How I Met Your Mother, Las Vegas, House M.D., and Ghost Whisperer.

Perry's girlfriend in the show Alice is played by the lovely and comical Andrea Anders who you may recognize from the short lived ABC sitcom, "Better Off Ted." She also happens to be Matt LeBlanc who played Friends lovable playboy character, Joey Tribbiani real life girlfriend.

Matthew Perry is not only Mr. Sunshine, he is the creator, writer, and producer of the show. He even shows off his artistic talent. The drawing of the shows lackadaisical sun logo is also his handy work. "Is there NO limit to his talent?" said in my Chandler-like voice. The answer is, NO! Mr. Sunshine could be one of ABC's funniest and successful mid-season comedy shows. It airs Wednesday nights at 9pm on ABC. I give this show 5-Suns!

Thanks for your comments!! So far I'm loving this show more and more. Matthew Perry's sitcom and it is totally his - as he created it and writes many of the episodes could be ABC's biggest hit. The chemistry and banter between him and co-star Allison Janney is priceless! I'm hooked!

I've seen it advertised and it looks like it will be a good one. I'm a Perry fan. He was in that other Aaron Sorkin TV drama "Studio 60" with Bradley Whitford and Amanda Peet. I thought it was an excellent show but I guess it was too clever for the general public. I haven't heard or seen any time periods for "Sunshine" yet. I'll be watching for it.
