On Saturday, March 6th I was looking for two twin sized mattresses for my boys' bunk beds and I cannot tell you what a hassle it was. I mistakenly thought I could go into a store and say, "I want two of those" and pay maybe fifty bucks a piece for them then come home and be done with it. I was sorely mistaken. I had no idea mattresses cost so much these days. The first store I went to quoted me $99 each! Are you insane? And that was just for a half mattress half box-spring combo thingy. These come with a box-spring underneath and a 2 inch foam top. Anyway, I walked out disgusted with the price. Then several stores later the price hadn't gone under the $99 mark. What the hell is going on?
Several weeks prior to this fiasco I had visited the Mattress Firm store located at 9531 Viscount Blvd in El Paso, Texas where I was quoted $69 per mattress. I didn't purchase them then because my vehicle was full at that time and I didn't have room to transport them. Plus the fact that they were located across town from where I lived so I didn't feel like traveling that far with my hatchback open. Because of all the bad luck I was having this day I decided to make the trip anyway. As I arrived I was greeted by Sandy Marrufo, the store's manager whom I had spoken to on a previous visit. During that visit I offered to pay with my brand new tennis shoes. She didn't bite. On this visit I spoke quickly and directly that I only wanted two twin mattresses for under $80 each. She politely asked me to follow her and showed me what I wanted. I said I'll take two and she immediately called the warehouse to confirm their availability. The look on her face told me I was S-O-L.
Apparently the day before which would have been Friday the 5th the manager or owner had donated a large portion of these mattresses to a local charity and sold what was left. Aye! Just my luck. She mentioned that she had several models that were a little more expensive that were available now. The mattresses she did have in stock were, yep you guessed it, the $99 models. I explained that I could easily purchase these models from several stores closer to my home. I could tell she understood my frustration and empathized with my predicament. She also mentioned another shipment of mattresses of the type I wanted that would arrive on Wednesday the 10th. That was great but I didn't want to drive back across town for them.
As I stood, slump-shouldered, thinking of what to do she consulted Bob Beltran the district manager and explained my dilemma. He then said he could sell me the $99 models for $95 but that was as low as he could go on those models. I thought about it further then I asked about delivery and how much that would cost if I waited for the cheaper models to arrive. Sandy said it cost $59 for delivery and my headache doubled in size. I decided that my kids would have to just sleep on their camping cots a little while longer at which point Bob took a deep breath and said, "If you by the $69 mattresses now and wait till they arrive on Wednesday I'll throw in the delivery for free.
What?! I couldn't believe my ears and I thought he might be joking. Any other company would have offered the free delivery on the more expensive models just to make a quick buck but not these guys. I restated his offer just to make sure I wasn't hearing things and he confirmed it. Wow! What an offer. It took me a whole 2 seconds to jump on the deal. Sandy then took me aside and said that the man I was speaking to didn't work there and couldn't offer me any deals. Ha! I'm only kidding. She didn't say that. She took me aside and wrote up the purchase order and then went even further in customer satisfaction. She asked me what time I would like my mattresses delivered. I had the option of having them in the morning, afternoon, or evening. I was completely blown away. I had never come across this kind of service.
So now here I sit reminiscing about what a wonderful time I had at the Mattress Firm talking with Sandy and Bob and the rest of the employees. It was a great experience and I invite anybody who in the future needs a mattress and lives in or is visiting El Paso to stop by the Mattress Firm. Even if you don't need a mattress just stop in and speak to the nicest people you can find. You can't go wrong when you're treated like a friend.

Post a CommentWARNING: INSPECT YOUR PURCHASE BEFORE YOU LEAVE THE STORE!! We too needed two twin mattresses, and needed them fast because company was coming. We went to the tent sale at the Viscount Mattress Firm and a very friendly person who identified himself as the store manager helped us... in and out fast, with what we *thought* was good deal. Well, he took us inside and showed us the current year model of what he sold us, with the color supposedly being the only difference, and pointed out the $599 price tag... but we could have the same mattress, with the foundation tossed in at no extra charge... for only $199. (He actually rang them up at $200, but we weren't going to quibble over a dollar) What a deal... right? Wrong! When we got home we found the price tags that showed the mattress was actually on sale for $149, with a "regular" price of $349. We live pretty far out of town, so it would have been a huge hassle to turn around and go back, so I just wrote it off as having paid for the "free" foundation. When we took the plastic off the first set, there was a tag on the foundation that said "Mattress Firm Promotion", and the corner was torn off. I strongly suspect the promotion was that the foundation was included with the mattress anyway. We put the first set on the bed, and then the second foundation on the other bed. When we tore the plastic off the second mattress, we saw that the piping around the edge had come unstitched and 3/4 of the end of the mattress had the top fabric separated from the bottom fabric, with the cheap foam filling exposed. The two parts of the fabric covering weren't even cut right to come together as intended. By this point, we had gone too far to make it worth the hassle of bringing back, so I got out a needle and some carpet thread and sewed the mattress cover back together myself. I can't even begin to describe how ripped off we feel. We will NEVER go back to Mattress Firm, and you can bet I will share our experience with as many people as we can.
