What are the best current movies for mature audiences?

The AARP (formerly the American Association of Retired Persons) announced its 10th annual Movies for Grownups awards this week. Presented annually in February, the awards honor cinematic achievements made by actors, directors, writers and producers over age 40.

The 2011 Movies for Grownup awards recognized motion pictures released cinematically in 2010. The awards are intended to honor movie performances and productions that appeal to more mature audiences and feature more seasoned participants.

The AARP named Movies for Grownups award winners in 15 categories:

Best Movie for Grownups: "The King's Speech"

Best Actor: Colin Firth (for "The King's Speech")

Best Actress: Lesley Manville (for "Another Year")

Best Supporting Actor: John Malkovich (for "Secretariat")

Best Supporting Actress: Phylicia Rashad (for "For Colored Girls")

Best Director: Danny Boyle (for "127 Hours")

Best Screenwriter: John Wells (for "The Company Men")

Best Grownup Love Story: Anne Bening and Julianne Moore (for "The Kids Are Alright")

Best Comedy: "City Island"

Best Intergenerational Film: "Flipped"

Best Documentary: "Waste Land"

Best Breakthrough Achievement: Helen Mirren (for "RED")

Best Foreign-Language Film: "Farewell"

Best Buddy Picture: "Unstoppable"

Best Movie for Grownups Who Refuse to Grow Up: "The Karate Kid"

Occasionally a Readers' Choice Award and Judge's Award for Extraordinary Merit are also offered by the AARP, as part of the Movies for Grownups Awards.

This year, the AARP will laud Hollywood icon Robert Redford with the Movies for Grownups Lifetime Achievement Award as well.

The 2011 AARP Movies for Grownups awards will be presented in February 2011 during a special ceremony in Beverly Hills, California.

The AARP Movies for Grownups awards are an annual offshoot of the "Movies for Grownups" radio talk program, hosted by Bill Newcott, entertainment editor of "AARP The Magazine." This two-minute program, which often includes brief film reviews, is aired every weekend on radio stations nationwide, as well as the Radio Prime Time website.

AARP editor and radio personality Bill Newcott's "Movies for Grownups" radio guests and review subjects often include mature movie stars and film producers, such as Julie Andrews, George Clooney, Robert Duvall, Clint Eastwood, Hugh Grant, Ron Howard, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Sean Penn, Joe Pesci, Rob Reiner, Joan Rivers, Kevin Spacey, Steven Spielberg, Sylvester Stallone, Oliver Stone, Alfre Woodard and others.
