Max Baucus, Health Care Reform, and the 'Mal-Distribution of Income'

Mark Whittington
In the event the gentle reader is of the opinion that the purpose of health care reform was to provide more people health insurance at lower cost, Senator Max Baucus would like to correct that misimpression.

According to Real Clear Politics:

"Too often, much of late, the last couple three years the mal-distribution of income in America is gone up way too much, the wealthy are getting way, way too wealthy, and the middle income class is left behind. Wages have not kept up with increased income of the highest income in America. This legislation will have the effect of addressing that mal-distribution of income in America."

These words have been getting a lot of play on the blogosphere and on talk radio and for good reason. Max Baucus seems to have made that type of gaffe that involves speaking the truth when perhaps he should have lied or just kept quiet.

The true purpose of health care reform, which is apparently to fix the "mal-distribution of income" as defined by Max Baucus, should not be a surprise to anyone, When President Barack Obama was a candidate for President, he informed Joe the Plumber that his purpose was to "spread the wealth."

Government decides, therefore, how much money one can and cannot make. There is a one would label for this approach to governance. It is called socialism.

President Obama regards himself as much of a transformative figure as was President Ronald Reagan. The catch is that Obama wants to transform the United States in the exact opposite way that President Reagan did.

Where Reagan wanted to encourage the creation of wealth, through tax cuts and the lifting of onerous regulations, President Obama wants to suppress the creation of wealth and to redistribute it by force from those who create it to those groups that the Democratic Party favors.

The result of Reagan's policies were years of unparalleled prosperity, coming off of the stagflation of the 1970s. The result of Obama's policies, so far, have been economic depression.

The effects of President Obama's redistributionist policies will not fall heaviest on the super rich, the Wall Street fat cats, the "economic royalists" against whom Democrats have inveighed since the dark days of Franklin Roosevelt. They have their wealth and can afford battalions of accountants and tax attorneys to protect it.

The effort to address the "mal-distribution of income" will fall on those who are trying to create wealth, the small businessmen and women. These are people who are operating hair and nail solons, ethnic restaurants, auto repair shops, small entrepreneurial technology companies, and a myriad of other small businesses with which they hope to grab a portion of the American dream. President Obama has targeted them, imposing health insurance mandates and taxes that will cripple them.

The charming side effect is that Obama's efforts will also cripple the engine of job creation, which is small business. Hope and change.
